Snapshot: ShopRite - Aberdeen, NJ

ShopRite of Aberdeen, NJ
Owner: Richard Saker / Saker Supermarkets
Opened: 2000s
Previous Tenants: none; replaced 1970s-era store on same property
Cooperative: Wakefern Food Corp.
Location: 318 Lloyd Rd, Aberdeen, NJ
Photographed: January 2021
Around the time the Stop & Shop across the street moved out of a former Grand Union into a new, 90,000 square foot building, the 1970s-era Saker ShopRite here constructed a new store on the same property. This one is just a tiny bit smaller than the Stop & Shop at 87,000 square feet, and we have a bit of a chicken and the egg situation here because I don't know which store's replacement prompted the other to do the same. Anywho, I don't have interior pictures of this location but tomorrow we are touring another Saker ShopRite about two and a half miles to the northeast right here. Come back to check it out!

(P.S. if you want to check out the other Aberdeen ShopRite, down in Maryland, see here!)

  1. Judging by the look of the outside of the store, I'm pretty sure it opened arpund 2001. Saker changed their exterior style a few times, and I'm pretty sure this came before the Manasquan/Wall Rt 34 store.

  2. I would say (with 98% confidence) that Stop & Shop was first.

I remember actually going into the old ShopRite store (maybe just because it was old, or it may have been the particular time we were there that I hadn't been to one at home) while the construction was ongoing for the new one (which made it a bit difficult, as the parking was kind of limited).

Looking at some reference photos, I would think this was in early 2004 (two events in a short timeframe Feb & April - one actually in Matawan the other Sayreville but on 9 just north of the 9/34 split), but we may have been in that area at other times.
