Update: ACME Markets!

Hoboken
Acme Style brings us more pictures of Hoboken which has recently installed a Frosted Mug-branded liquor department, where A&P previously had liquor (nearly six years after they acquired the store). This was followed a few weeks later with a Quality Built remodel, with some interesting idiosyncracies that we'll see.
Acme Style caught the liquor department being installed, as well as a few photos from the post-remodel store. All of these pictures except the very first one are Acme Style's.
Liquor is back in the front left corner, with some upgrades compared to A&P's department. A new register next to the floral department in the front corner has been installed specifically for the liquor store.
As we can see, the flooring is also being replaced -- possibly even throughout the whole store. We'll see more signs of that shortly.
I suspect, although I can't 100% tell, that this will also serve as the customer service counter.
Looks like these cases are all new, although I suppose it's also possible that they were just painted.
I believe, although I can't confirm for sure, that this was the customer service counter which is now all floral.
As Acme Style points out, the arrangements of the walls makes it so that the decor for produce/seafood in the first aisle is nearly invisible from all angles.
New frozen cases for seafood at the back of the first aisle. Also, clearly, the flooring is in the process of being replaced here. Was the ceiling painted in this first aisle? It looks darker, and in a bit better shape than the rest...
A look across the front end. Looks like this ceiling could stand for a repaint.
It's unclear whether this flooring will be replaced, too.
Looks here like the cases on the right (the outside wall) were replaced, although I'm not sure how recently.
Note that, oddly, A&P's Corner Bakery sign remains, despite the fact that a QB bakery sign was installed just to the left...
As I pointed out in my original Hoboken post, many of these fixtures had already been replaced. The flooring was also removed here, although as I said I don't know if it's just the perimeter or the whole store.
Before, and during...
Looks like the work going on here is pretty extensive.
We are also seeing a second store courtesy of Acme Style, which we saw the early stages of construction on in our last ACME update.

Fort Lee
Liquor returns also to Fort Lee...

Taking stock of other stores:
  • Allendale: Liquor has returned, unclear whether there's been a QB remodel.
  • Jefferson/Oak Ridge (tour coming soon): The A&P Preservation blogger reports that a remodel is soon to begin and construction permits are posted.
  • Jersey City (18th St): Acme Style reports that register lights have been replaced with QB ones and the A&P health & beauty sign has been removed.
  • Midland Park: Liquor has returned, but it does not seem that there's been a remodel.
Check out what else we have today here!

  1. Excited to hear a remodel is in the works for Jefferson!

    A few notes on Hoboken:

•Customer Service has been relocated to the opposite end of the registers. Now a fraction of its original size.

•New floral department is exactly where Customer Service used to be.

•New beer cases have been installed! Strange that it happened a few weeks after ACME set up the whole department. Frosted Mug signage has now been installed on the new cases.

•The dairy cases are not new even thought they look like it from the outside. The old cases just had doors installed on them along with new lighting. ACME has been doing this in a lot of stores. I thought they might be new cases but took a closer look and saw plenty of evidence on the insides that they are very very old.

  2. I didn't expect it to happen this year! Acme got a renovation in Hoboken! Hard to believe this store originally started out as a Foodtown before A&P...

When will they get its renovation to begin in Oak Ridge? Like late this year? Or early next year?

    1. No idea, sorry. I won't be able to get out to Oak Ridge in the near future, but if I hear anything I will certainly include it in a future update post.

    2. I should confirm that the renovation in Oak Ridge is coming this summer.

  3. How is Acme getting all these liquor licenses? Did the state change the rules on liquor licenses, or are these liquor departments technically outside vendors?

    1. I've been trying to find the answer to that too! Although, I don't think ACME is getting new liquor licenses. They're somehow getting A&P's back. (I haven't seen any liquor depts popping up in former A&Ps that never had a liquor dept) I also don't think that they're outside vendors. The shelf tags are all ACME and the register & card readers are ACME as well. They may be running them as some kind of separate business which is why you can only pay at the registers in the liquor department. Interesting too cause the card reader has you answer a few questions about the service prior to finalizing payment.

    2. Yep, they're not outside vendors, and I'm not sure on the details. They are now allowed to take on the A&P liquor licenses, but I don't know exactly how or why. I'll let you know if I hear anything else.

    3. I don't have specifics, but apparently state law was adjusted to allow supermarkets to take over liquor licenses from other supermarkets which had them and went out of business. They can acquire them in excess of the 2 store per owner limit otherwise. I just discovered this in the last few days.

    4. That's my understanding too, but like you, I'm not sure how the details work.

  4. But I can't say the same thing about West New York in recent memory, as they still have A&P's second "Fresh" decor package.
