Again, apologies for the bad car-window photos. This Food Lion was built between 1989 and 2005, and I'd bet that it was on the earlier end of that but I very well could be wrong. The 35,000 square foot store is the older of the two Food Lions in town, but it's actually the larger -- the other is just shy of 32,000. Food Lion does tend to have some of the smaller stores in the realm of big-chain supermarkets, many of which are closer to the 30-40,000 square foot range than the 60-70,000 range. Any mid-Atlantic locals, do you have any explanations for this phenomenon?

I promise that tomorrow we have better pictures as we take a look inside an independent supermarket just south of here on The Independent Edition!

  1. Not a local to that area, but having read about the company it is explained that they stuck with a more "basic" store.

Thus, it was quite some time before they even had things like a deli or bakery area, and I suspect even now they have few other service departments in most stores, along with less "non grocery" stuff.

Part of the idea was keeping their prices low, which was easier to do with less space and less employees needed (and that had to be paid for).

    1. Right, that makes sense. Not quite a hard-discount store like Save-A-Lot, or even A&P's Food Basics, but certainly more on the basic end of the spectrum. Thanks for the explanation!
