Gala Foods Supermarket
Opened: September 9, 2025Greetings from Long Island, where I recently spent a day. Living in New Jersey, it's not exactly easy to get across to Long Island -- even parts of Queens can be upwards of three hours for a distance that's barely 30 miles -- so I don't often post stores from the eastern suburbs of New York City. But here we are in Centereach, a hamlet about 50 miles east of midtown Manhattan, where the Aurora Grocery Group has just opened its latest store.
At 21,000 square feet, it's not a large supermarket, but it's spacious and open. It's a new-build store, part of a newly constructed strip mall on Middle Country Road, which is a main thoroughfare through this area. This is actually the only supermarket within Centereach, but that doesn't meat we're far from other grocers. ShopRite, Fine Fare, Stop & Shop, ALDI, Lidl, Target, Walmart, Wegmans, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Giunta's Meat Farms are all within three miles.
Produce is on the right side of the store, with meat on the back wall along with a combined butcher-seafood service counter. Deli and bakery are on the left side in the last aisle with beer, and frozen/dairy are in the grocery aisles on the left side. It's not a big store, but it's definitely full service and seems prepared to hold its own against the many, many competitors.
Gala Foods is part of the Aurora Grocery Group, which owns Gala Foods and Gala Fresh Farms stores affiliated with Key Food in the northeast, and Compare Foods stores affiliated with the Associated Supermarket Group in the mid-Atlantic.
The selection here overall is pretty straightforward, but this store does have a larger Latin American selection than most of the other competitors I mentioned. Still, it's clear Gala wants to position this store as a mainstream supermarket rather than primarily an international store.
There are half a dozen other Gala Foods on Long Island, and three additional Gala Fresh Farms stores. One, in Shirley, is also a relatively recent opening. Another Gala Foods is under construction to the north in Bridgeport, CT.
Although it's not a large store, it feels bright and open because of the high ceiling and big windows that let in a lot of light.
The storebrand here is Urban Meadow from Key Food, but Aurora also has a small number of products under their own Gala brand.
If I remember correctly, aisle 8 is frozen foods, aisle 9 is dairy, and aisle 10 is the last aisle that has deli/bakery.
I couldn't tell for sure whether there was an in-store bakery here. There's no service bakery counter, but that's not unusual in a store of this size.
And beer is up in the front of the last aisle here, with customer service on the front wall beyond it.
This store opened in the beginning of September, but had its official ribbon cutting on September 27. The decorations were still up when I visited.
And that wraps up our tour of the new Gala Foods in Centereach!
