The Market Report

Given that this is a supermarket blog, you might be surprised that I'd post a video that's not exactly sympathetic to the commercial food system of the US. But this is a really important issue that Ron Finley, a self-proclaimed "guerilla gardener" from South Central LA, addresses head-on in this TED Talk. It's definitely worth the 11 minutes to watch this one. "Growing your own food is like printing your own money." Except not illegal. Don't try that at home, kids.

This former Stop & Shop (which was itself a former Grand Union) moved across Route 23 to the Kinnelon Mall when S&S took over the Pathmark in the A&P bankruptcy. It's the same style as the GU-turned-S&S-turned-Met Fresh in Nyack, NY that we saw a while ago, except that store's facade had been redone by Met Fresh. This store is in pretty sad condition, but I doubt another supermarket would be interested in taking it over. Maybe a Foodtown or IGA, but we're well out of the immediate NYC surroundings here, making Key Food/Krasdale/ASG/AFB operators very unlikely.

Here's a quick drive-by photo of a small grocery store in Orange, NJ. The One Stop Supermarket (not Stop One ) is located at 50 Main St in the City of Orange. Apparently it's also a Budget truck rental place! I have no idea what group (if any) this is a part of. Has anyone been here? Any input?

I came across the online listing for the former Super Xtra in Newark, NJ on LoopNet, a real estate search engine. I thought the photos were worth saving simply because so little information is available online about this store. This, in fact, was my first glimpse of the interior. Quick look today at a supermarket in Morristown, NJ, which looks like it could actually have been a part of our Hudson County tour! LC Supermarket is a small store, and the only ethnic supermarket in Morristown, whose Hispanic population is growing. The store is actually much smaller than it looks, because it's an L-shape and gets much narrower in the back. LC is from the old school of ethnic markets, a small neighborhood market with specific ethnic products. A store like Food Bazaar or Superfresh Food World has not yet opened in Morristown, which is an interesting mix of higher-income suburban neighborhoods and lower-income urban(ish) neighborhoods. This store is located at 135 Speedwell Ave, Morristown, NJ.

It's now time for our... LAST HUDSON COUNTY STORE! WITH A SPECIAL SURPRISE... In case you missed anything, you can always visit the Blog Directory and search by town name. But now for today's tour... This, if anything, would be the only repeat of banners we've seen in this section (and I've pretty much covered everything within this range, except for a few stores to the east). And that's only if you count the closed Fine Fare up by 70th St. This Fine Fare is probably an old chain supermarket. It's even a possible former Acme, given the tower shown on the corner here. While it's possible that it was installed by a later tenant, it's rather unlikely. This supermarket became a Super Supermarket, which also replaced a Mayfair Foodtown that replaced the Acme in Orange. So it's possible the same thing occurred here.
