Either way, let's tour this brand-new Foodtown, built in a former Rite Aid at the corner of Halsey and Broadway. After a real slump, Allegiance is back at it with several notable openings . In addition, Village Marketplace over in South Orange has joined, and when I visited most recently it was looking great (and busy) around a year after its opening. The cooperative is also apparently in discussions to add a fourth Pathmark , this time in Delaware . Bread & Butter Market Opened: September 21, 2026 Owner: unknown Previous Tenants: Khim's Millennium Market (ca. 2008 - ca. 2022) Cooperative: Associated Supermarket Group Location: 460 Driggs Ave, Brooklyn, NY Photographed: October 7, 2026 Yesterday, we saw that even some of New York City's legacy supermarkets like Shop Fair  are bringing it up a notch with their new stores. Here in Williamsburg, a local independent has opened a spectacular new supermarket -- one that feels much more like a high-end, gourmet market than a regular supermarket. This new Bread & Butter Market is a member of the Associated Supermarket Group, and joins much smaller Bread & Butter locations that are much closer to bodegas than supermarkets in Williamsburg and Roosevelt Island. It also joins another ASG store to the east about 3/4 of a mile along Driggs -- a very old-fashioned Met Foods that nevertheless serves the neighborhood faithfully. The Market of Maplewood Opened:  August 2026 Owner: Adam & Erica Shapiro Previous Tenants: A&P (opened 1928) > Kings Food Markets (1942-2020) > Green Way Markets (2021-2025) > The Food Emporium (December 2025 - August 2026) Cooperative: Associated Supermarket Group Location: 159 Maplewood Ave, Maplewood, NJ Photographed: September 22, 2026 New Jersey independent supermarket operator Shap Markets has recently left Key Food and joined the Associated Supermarket Group, and in doing so, has rebranded three of their stores from Key Food brands (SuperFresh and The Food Emporium) to The Market.
