We're just up the street from the Ben & Jerry's factory, which is itself a tourist attraction where you can tour the plant, and up here in Waterbury Center there's also a Cabot Creamery store where you can sample and buy delicious local cheeses. And if you need some local produce to go with those cheeses and ice cream, you're in luck. Woodstock Farmers Market opened up here in 2019 replacing another farm market. (This 5,000 square foot store is the second Woodstock Farmers Market, with the first -- logically -- being located around 50 miles south in Woodstock .) Shaw's Opened: 2006 Owner: Albertsons Companies Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative: none Location: 820 Waterbury-Stowe Rd, Waterbury, VT Photographed: August 10, 2025 So as you can see, this is definitely up there with the worst supermarket pictures I've ever taken. Yes, there's a Shaw's back there, and it's a roughly 53,000 square foot store built from the ground up in 2006. Here's what the outside actually looks like, and some glimpses of the interior. This store is more than double the size of the other supermarket in town, which we toured yesterday and you can see here . And if you're coming to this stretch of Waterbury-Stowe Road from out of town, you're probably not here to visit the Shaw's but instead to visit Ben & Jerry's, whose factory is just across the street. Waterbury Village Market Opened: ca. 1990 Owner: Associated Grocers Northeast Previous Tenants: unknown Cooperative: Associated Grocers Northeast Location: 80 S Main St, Waterbury, VT Photographed: August 10, 2025 In this somewhat remote part of northern Vermont, most small-town supermarkets (and general stores and convenience stores and food stores in general) are supplied by Associated Grocers Northeast, formerly Associated Grocers of New England. But AGNE also owns some stores in Vermont and New Hampshire, including this one and this one that we've already toured. Here's another store owned by AGNE, the Waterbury Village Market in the small town of Waterbury. To situate yourself, we're about 10 miles northwest of Montpelier and 25 miles southeast of Burlington. Looking at this exterior, it really looks like this store is a modified A&P centennial , right? Either way, let's tour this brand-new Foodtown, built in a former Rite Aid at the corner of Halsey and Broadway. After a real slump, Allegiance is back at it with several notable openings . In addition, Village Marketplace over in South Orange has joined, and when I visited most recently it was looking great (and busy) around a year after its opening. The cooperative is also apparently in discussions to add a fourth Pathmark , this time in Delaware .
