Although I don't know for sure, I have a nagging feeling that this 50,000 square foot Stop & Shop started out as a Big V-owned ShopRite. I have no evidence of that other than a vague feeling. Anyway, the store, which has closed, is scheduled to be replaced by Evergreen Kosher Supermarket, whose Monsey locaiton we saw here. This store competed with an A&P-turned-Inserra ShopRite in nearby Garnerville, which still has remnants of A&P decor inside, much like Danbury. Our next stop is to the south in New City tomorrow!

  1. The historic photos show it was built after 1975 but before 1994, and that sometime between 1994 and 2004 the front was added onto.

Not sure if that makes it any more (or less) likely to have been a Big V store but the size seems similar enough and they were in an expansion mode in the late 1980's/early 1990's so it certainly seems like a possibility (and then their disappearance as a company and closures then and just prior to cut costs would make sense for S&S to have taken over pre-2004 with the addition (which also created the current roofline - the original looked flatter without the pointed part).

    1. Thanks for the details! I'll have to look into this location more to see if I can find anything.

  2. This store opened as a Grand Union in 1978 or so, and it remained pretty much untouched in its original form until Grand Union renovated and expanded it just prior to the bankruptcy in 2000. Stop & Shop took on the store as part of its acquisition of a number of the downstate Grand Union stores.

As for Big V, I don't think that operator ever made it into Rockland County. As best I can recall, all of the ShopRite stores in Rockland have been operated by the Inserra family except the Pearl River location.
