Returning to the Millburn ShopRite (after our last coverage) to check on the progress of this renovation! It's moving along quite nicely, with parts of the store starting to look really good. The grand aisle is still undergoing some serious changes, with the largest construction happening to the deli-seafood area to remove the service seafood counter and to rework the fixtures in this area. The deli/cheese islands opposite the deli counter have been removed and will eventually, as far as I can tell, take up the corner we see below in upright cases.
I don't believe the store will have a service seafood counter post-remodel. Instead, the fish will be displayed in a self-service case at the back of the grand aisle.
A small note about selection: it looks like Village might be really scaling back their efforts in prepared foods and perishables. They had recently been one of the members with the largest deli-prepared foods selections, with huge investments in in-store kitchens and service counters. Based on trips to this store and a few others, such as Somerset, Elizabeth, and West Orange, Village is preparing nearly all the fresh items in their Bronx warehouse acquired from Fairway in 2020, with even things like sliced cheese and lunchmeat being labeled with not the store's address, but VSM at 400 Walnut Ave in the Bronx. Prepared foods, salads, and sandwiches at Elizabeth were all made in the Bronx warehouse, and were looking a bit elderly at my most recent visit. The deli counters seem to have eliminated any fresh things like prepared salads and all of those are now coming from the Bronx, too, rather than from the store's facilities. I assume that's for a cost savings, but also probably related to store staffing.
Produce fixtures have all been replaced and the produce department looks great!
Here's where I believe the seafood department will eventually be relocated.
Looking at the meat department on the back wall. Flooring, aisle markers, and new freezers look great!
The grocery aisles look good too, with new flooring and a reset.
All-new freezers and flooring make the freezer aisles look pretty sharp, if not too special.
As we see, these cold cuts cases were replaced too.
I hope there's some really exciting decor going up on the walls here, and then this store will really be great. Otherwise it'll be nicer than it was, but not too special.
Rearranged front corner here with beverages is much more spacious than it used to be, although there's a little bit of a junk problem where there used to be longer aisles.
I don't believe the registers themselves are being replaced, but the self-checkouts are new.
Notice the first aisle still has its old aisle marker! I wonder what they're waiting for to remove it. Only five registers here, with quite a few self-checkouts. That's very little for a ShopRite. But anyhow, that's all for this ShopRite, and we'll see what else happens here in the future! Here's our other posts for the weekend:
