Special Report: Save A Lot/SuperFresh - Hillside, NJ

Save A Lot Opened: 2019 Owner:  unknown Previous Tenants:  ShopRite > Pathmark > Hillside IGA > Drug Fair > Walgreens Later Tenants:  SuperFresh (May 2025- ) Cooperative:  none Location:  1303 N Broad St, Hillside, NJ Photographed:  March 1, 2024 and May 27, 2025 Welcome to the Hillside Save A Lot! This is one of only three in North Jersey, with the other two in nearby Newark and Orange . Well actually, it's about to be down to two in North Jersey. This Hillside location is in the process of switching to SuperFresh. This building has been a supermarket for a long time, being constructed around the late 1950s as a ShopRite, then becoming a Pathmark in 1968. After Pathmark closed, it became the Hillside IGA until around the 90s, then a Drug Fair and a Walgreens. Walgreens moved to a newly built location nearby, and a few years later, Save A Lot opened in 2019. I believe it was originally a corporately-owned Save A Lot, and when they sold all the...

Special Report: Village ShopRite!

I hope your spring break is wonderful -- although, at least for my part of New Jersey, it's still gray and rainy and cold. I'm interrupting my planned break to post about something that might  be big news, although it's really difficult to tell just how significant the scope of the change might be. We're here in northern New Jersey to visit some of the Village Super Market-owned ShopRite stores. VSM owns about 30 ShopRites in NJ, NY, PA, and MD, and a handful of Gourmet Garage and Fairway stores in New York City. They've recently remodeled several stores, including Bernardsville and Springfield , and just under two months ago unveiled a spectacular new store in Watchung replacing an older location. About a year ago, Village began introducing Gourmet Garage and Fairway branded items at their ShopRite stores. (See here .) I was tipped off by a message from a reader who works in the industry saying he was told that, about three weeks ago, employees of a Village-owne...

Spring Break!

Happy spring, everyone! Now that we're done with the suburbs south of Boston (or at least, the ones I've visited), we're off to Boston. But first, it's spring break. We'll be taking not quite two weeks off from posting, and I'll resume posting on Monday, June 2, 2024 with a look at the southern neighborhoods of Boston. Have a great break, and I'll see you on the other side next month!

TOUR: Stop & Shop - Quincy, MA (Newport)

Stop & Shop Opened: late 1990s Owner:  Ahold Delhaize Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative:  none Location:  65 Newport Ave, Quincy, MA Photographed:  August 4, 2019 and May 6, 2023 Given that Stop & Shop is based here in Quincy, it's fitting that the last store we're going to see in town is a Stop & Shop. There's another store in the city, too, just outside of downtown on Southern Artery . 2019 This is another multi-year store tour, so it's a combination of pictures from my 2019 visit and from 2023. This was the first Stop & Shop I visited with their latest decor package , and I was really impressed. It was a significant step up from what they'd been doing . The nearly 80,000 square foot store is a fairly typical (if slightly larger than average) late-90s Super Stop & Shop model, and it's not that different from the other Quincy location -- just slightly larger. 2023 The layout is also very similar to the Southern Artery store, with the gran...
