Wells Super Food Market
Opened: 2011 under current ownership; unknown previously
Today, the space is occupied by the Wells Super Food Market IGA. You enter in the front-left corner and walk across the front wall in front of the registers to produce on the right side of the front wall. Wine is in the first aisle, with meat and deli on the back wall. Frozen, dairy, and beer are on the left side.
This is clearly a very old-school store but has gotten some updates. The decor is old, but looks like it might be newly repainted. And it doesn't resemble any A&P decor I'm aware of, so my best guess is that the most recent renovation -- possibly including the expansion -- happened after A&P closed.
"Natural Foods" (now condiments) in the front-right corner.
And wine lines the rest of the first aisle.
The store has an old-fashioned look, but clearly has gotten work. The paint all looks fresh, and much of the refrigeration is pretty new, including probably these service counters. The store was taken over by its current owners in 2011, and it looks like they've done a lot of the updates we're seeing.
A look ac the back wall, with service deli and meat, then packaged meat, and dairy on the far left side.
This flooring also doesn't match anything I'm familiar with from A&P, so I would assume it was installed after A&P left.
Like most other IGAs in the northeast, this store is supplied by Bozzuto's. In addition to the IGA brand, they use Food Club and Full Circle items.
Here we can see some much newer fixtures in frozen.
On the other hand, this milk case looks pretty old, and could be from the A&P days.
Beer and the rest of dairy lines the last aisle, which could also be considered the first aisle if you start here. The entrance is on this side.
Here's a look across the front wall towards the entrance and exit. In the below picture, my back is to the produce department, and the registers are just behind the baked goods shelving.
Owner: Nick and Nicki Hunter
You can recognize that storefront anywhere! The green siding doesn't hide this building's past as a centennial A&P, built in the 1960s. It's an extremely small centennial, though, of just 6500 square feet, making it one of the smallest. The supermarket is now closer to 14,000 square feet, although I'm unsure exactly when that expansion happened or who was responsible for it.Previous Tenants: A&P (opened 1960s)
Cooperative: IGA
Location: 1517 Post Rd, Wells, ME
Photographed: June 11, 2022 and March 6, 2025

The Wells IGA is a nice little small-town store, and it's nice to see an A&P of this era still going strong selling groceries. Tomorrow, we continue our northward travels in Wiscasset!
