Food Bazaar Supermarket

We're returning to the Food Bazaar in Piscataway to check in on this store, which was acquired from Stop & Shop back in 2024. After a little over a year of doing absolutely nothing to this rather rundown store, it closed in the first week in January of this year for renovations. The roughly 70,000 square foot store never seemed to pick up much business -- and, let's face it, a dingy circa-1996 Edwards isn't exactly the ideal shopping environment. During the time that Food Bazaar operated this store from the fall of 2024 to early 2026, they didn't renovate at all. Now, it's clear why -- after closing the store, it's been completely gutted (or, actually it's still in the process of being gutted). When I stopped by this week, crews from two Queens-based contractors were hard at work inside, and I could hear sawing or grinding or sanding or something. The doors were open, so I could get a look inside.
One of the most stubborn parts of this store, and probably why this one closed while the others stayed open for their remodels, was the Edwards tile flooring. It was in bad shape, but also actual tiles, not just linoleum. A glance inside showed a couple of skidsteer loaders inside, which were probably used to scrape up the tiles (and can't happen while the store is open).
Most of the store except the former produce department on the left side has been gutted. Even the walls closing up the backrooms and meat room have been removed, as evidenced by the "meat" sign still hanging, lonely, all by itself over a big hole where the loading docks are. In other words, when Food Bazaar rebuilds this store, they're really starting from scratch.
I couldn't get as good of a view in on the left side, but it looks like the produce department hasn't been fully demolished yet. Clearly, there's still a lot of work left to do here, so I would be surprised if this store even reopens before the end of the year.
We'll keep an eye as the renovation here progresses, but they're essentially starting over with an empty box -- so this is going to take some time. In the meantime, you can see the rest of this weekend's posts here!
