SuperFresh
...although, above, the two banners below the logo (Supermarket and Now Open!) are left over from the Save A Lot days. As we'll see, almost everything is. On the storefront itself, the Save A Lot logo has been covered but not yet replaced with anything, as a much smaller SuperFresh logo has been added to the left.
Inside, the store looks very similar. All the fixtures and decor Save A Lot.
Key Food brands are on the shelves now, and there's a much larger grocery selection than when it was a Save A Lot. They're cutting meat in-store, but there are no service departments. I don't know if there's a plan to eventually add them, and I can't tell if this is it or if there's more changes coming.
Beyond some small resets, the store's layout hasn't changed.
Some Save A Lot items were marked down to clear them out, including canned beans and vegetables at 4 for $1. Except for the black eyed peas, which were marked at 4 for $3,999.96. Something tells me that's not the right price.
As a matter of fact, I spotted a couple of price tags with typos in the product names (or things like that). Nothing major, but it felt a little sloppy. Generally, I find most of the Key Food stores to be well-run and fairly professional, but this one feels just like a rebranded Save A Lot. We'll see if that changes.
As you can see, though, there's a lot more to offer here than Save A Lot had.
There's another, much larger SuperFresh -- apparently under different owners -- about a mile and a half northwest, in Irvington. There's also another location in Newark, just under three miles north, which is also under different owners.
Dairy and frozen looking basically the same, except with Urban Meadow in place of Coburn Farms and Fairhill Farms.
And a look at the front-end.

As we can see, the switch to SuperFresh has brought not a whole lot of change other than a broadening of the grocery selection (which, of course, was already happening in the last few years under Save A Lot) and some different storebrands. I was hoping for bigger changes, and we'll see if they're still coming, but so far it looks like that's all. Speaking of bigger changes, don't miss this weekend's look at two ShopRite renovations, and on Monday we're back to Boston!
