LIDL
Opened: February 12, 2025
Let's take a walk through the new LIDL in Paramus, NJ, which opened in February at the end of a strip mall in one of New Jersey's busiest retail corridors. Paramus is home to lots of supermarkets, including a first-gen Amazon Fresh basically right across the highway from this store.
Although this new LIDL and the Amazon Fresh are very different formats, they definitely compete directly. This 30,000 square foot store looks a lot like other recent LIDLs we've seen, including yesterday's downtown Brooklyn location. The layout is a bit different, but not that unlike the other LIDLs.
You enter in the front-right corner to bakery and packaged deli/prepared foods in the first aisle on the right side. Produce is opposite along the front wall. The grocery aisles are behind produce, with meat and dairy on the back wall. Frozen is in the second-to-last aisle and dairy continues down the outside wall of the last aisle.
Although this is definitely a discount store environment, it's an attractive and modern space. The big windows help with a lot of natural light.
This particular part of Bergen County is an area with very few ALDIs, and a handful of LIDLs (several in former A&P/ACME stores). It's a fairly affluent area, for the most part, which may contribute to the relative lack of discount supermarkets. Still, stores like LIDL and ALDI don't always shy away from higher-income areas.

...and continuing down the back wall. You can see the blue frame for the Midl of Lidl sign on the left below.
The grocery aisles are standard. This strikes me as a store that's very well taken care of, and even for a discount store it was pretty well-stocked and organized, even several months out from its opening.

LIDL's expansion in this area seems to have picked up again after a couple years of not much. In addition to those two Brooklyn stores, there are a handful of other NYC stores in progress, along with a couple in Rockland and Westchester Counties and a few in north Jersey.
These new stores are simple, but in my opinion much nicer and sleeker than comparable new ALDIs. They're also larger, with a somewhat larger product selection. (My comparison back in January found that ALDI and LIDL were very similar on price, but that LIDL is slightly higher.)
There are self-checkouts in the front-left corner, and then a few staffed checkouts on the front end. Produce is behind the person visible on the left side of the below picture.
Now for a look at another new LIDL in progress!

LIDL
Opening: TBA
Over in Totowa, about 10 miles southwest, LIDL is preparing to open in a roughly 40,000 square foot former Marshalls. Marshalls, meanwhile, moved to a former Toys R Us just down the street, and an ALDI moved into a former Office Depot next door in 2021 or so. At between 20,000 and 25,000 square feet, the ALDI is quite a bit smaller than this upcoming LIDL, but it has a more visible location. This one is on a side street away from route 46, the main highway. I'll be back when this one opens, but in the meantime, here's this weekend's other posts!Opening: TBA
