In 2024, the ShopRite in Piscataway moved into a new location in South Plainfield. The 63,000 square foot space was subdivided, with about 30,000 square feet being dedicated to a brand-new Patel Brothers. It's a logical new tenant, as the Indian American community of this part of Central Jersey is growing rapidly. And although there's a lot of retail right in this area of Piscataway, there are no Indian supermarkets right here (there's a Subzi Mandi in the southern part of town).
Patel Brothers very extensively renovated the left side of the former ShopRite into a brand-new, stylish Indian supermarket. Produce is on the right side with dairy on the back wall and frozen in the last aisle on the left side. In the front-left corner, there's a bakery and kitchen area with desserts, hot foods, a juice bar, and a dessert counter plus a seating area.
This is the newest Patel Brothers, and one of the relatively few locations with any decor at all (their older locations are completely decor-free). I particularly like the wood paneling here in produce, and as we'll see, the design of the cafe area is very attractive too.
There's no doubt there was a need for this store in the area, as the grand opening turned out to be, well, rather popular.
The grocery aisles are still fairly no-frills, but the perimeter of the store has a higher-end look than the completely no-nonsense earlier Patel Brothers stores.
Lots of baked goods in the large in-store bakery, including things like naan and roti, desserts, and savory pastries.
And Patel's Fresh Kitchen is just around the corner with a lot of prepared foods, both made-to-order and grab-and-go.
A juice and ice cream counter is in the back of the cafe, which is along the front wall of the supermarket.
And the front-end is sleek and spacious (though, as evidenced by that YouTube video, it definitely fills up).
Now for a quick look at the other side of the building...
...where ShopRite's former exit foyer is intact, and will likely serve as the entrance for the new tenant that moves in.

Nothing else is left over inside the ShopRite, though, and except for some of the tile floor, the space has been gutted. No word yet on what will move into this side of the building. What time of day were you there? I've been to Patel Brothers but it was a Sunday in East Windsor and it was absolute chaos. I'd like to check one out at a better time. We have a Subzi Mandi near me but it's pretty dirty.
