Bennington is home to three big-chain grocery stores, a Hannaford and a Price Chopper (plus an ALDI I don't have pictures of). I haven't been inside either, so this post will be quick. The Hannaford is around 54,000 square feet, built in the 1990s (and it doesn't appear to have previously been a Shop 'n Save, though I'm not certain of that). Here's a look inside.

I figured this picture of the Price Chopper was bad enough that it didn't even deserve its own post. This store is a bit larger than the Hannaford, measuring around 60,000 square feet. Here's what the outside actually looks like, and a look inside. It looks very similar to basically any circa-2000-build Price Chopper. Tomorrow, we're going to check out a lot of the corner stores here in Bennington before moving on!

  1. As I might have noted elsewhere, the prior Price Chopper in town was across from the Hannaford, and is now part of the Home Depot (the rest was a former Ames) - one of the more unusual stores for that chain since it is half as deep but twice as wide as their normal setup. Part of the rules that VT has for reuse of buildings vs. building new.

Another interesting fact - when this current PC was built they removed a few smaller storefronts that ran perpendicular to the road (Northside) - a couple were rebuilt with it (I think the paint store and maybe one other are still there now). BUT - the left side of the plaza at that time had a few smaller spots and the original Walmart - which was in an old 5 & 10 spot and was only around 55,000 Square Feet - might be the only setup where Walmart was SMALLER than the grocery store in the same plaza! That was finally rebuilt to what is there today, but I'm pretty sure it's still small for Walmart (like 100,000 Sq. Ft. - which is not even quite as large as most regular [non super] stores).

I only remember Hannaford there (the spot to the right of it was a Rite Aid before they bought Brooks out), and no other name, but that might just be all I remember. If anything, they could have used another name (like Martin's or Sun Foods) over that way, but then again, they may not have.

And the Aldi was built for them on a vacant spot - the CVS next to it showed up first (relocated from the plaza that now has Ocean State, formerly had Kmart, JC Penney and some supermarket that I think from discussion may have been the A&P relocation from downtown).
