The Independent Edition: Roxbury

Now we're going to check out a few independent grocers in Roxbury, starting with one at the northern end of the neighborhood just a couple blocks from Tropical Foods!

Roxbury

Daily Table Grocery
Open: 2018-2025
Owner: nonprofit
Previous Tenants: non-grocery tenants
Cooperative: none
Location: 2201 Washington St, Roxbury, MA
Photographed: June 2, 2019
We've seen Daily Table locations in Dorchester and Mattapan, but after opening their Dorchester location in 2016, they opened up here in Roxbury in a small storefront in 2018. The store looks similar inside but is a bit smaller, clocking in at just under 3000 square feet. It closed with the rest of the Daily Table locations in May. Just south of here is a new independent grocer that I haven't gotten to visit yet called Nubian Markets, a small specialty supermarket and cafe that specializes in African foods.

Davey's Super Market
Opened: 1983 under current ownership; 1910 previously
Owner: Pedro Teixeira
Previous Tenants: none
Cooperative: none
Location: 438 Dudley St, Roxbury, MA
Photographed: June 2 and June 15, 2019
Davey's Super Market is a very different store, and a longtime Roxbury corner grocer. It's been here since 1910, but it's only been under its current ownership since 1983. The 5000 square foot market is very old-school but has newer murals on two of its sides.
The store is closed on Sundays, so my pictures of the store with the front rolling doors down were taken on a Sunday.
The Nubian Roots (along with the Nubian Markets name) refers to Nubian Square, the central area of Roxbury, which was previously called Dudley Square.

La Gran Parada Meat Market
Open: 2009-2021
Owner: Jose Liriano
Previous Tenants: non-grocery tenants
Cooperative: none
Location: 561 Dudley St, Roxbury, MA
Photographed: June 15, 2019
Ending our look at independent grocers in Roxbury with a look at this butcher shop and grocer, which opened in what appears to have previously been a residential building in 2009. It closed in 2021 and the building is now a cannabis store. That's all for Roxbury, and tomorrow we're off to the next neighborhood to the east of here!
