We're returning to the ACME of Greenwich, CT, a small former A&P of just around 21,000 square feet. (For ACME, that's small, but it's obviously quite a bit bigger than the small NYC stores we're also seeing this weekend!) You can check out my previous, very short, post on the store here. It's directly across the street from an equally small Grand Union-turned-Stop & Shop. Now, ACME has announced they're closing this store in early October. So let's take a look at the store before it closes!
Note that these pictures were taken back in January. Now, this store was originally an A&P centennial of around 17,000 square feet, and was later expanded by A&P out the front wall. You can clearly see above where the original store ended; produce and the registers are now in the expansion. Deli and cheese line the rest of the first aisle with meat, seafood, and bakery at the back. Dairy and frozen are on the left side.
ACME replaced the decor here shortly after opening in late 2015, but other than bringing in a few new produce cases, they really haven't done anything to this location. Still, it's a bit surprising that it's closing. According to Placer.ai, it does a bit less business than the Stop & Shop across the street but still a decent business. Their equally-small location over in Riverside three miles east is one of the very, very few acquired stores to still have A&P decor inside, so I was thinking that might be the first to close. Actually, though, that store does more traffic than this one. ACME also has locations in New Canaan and Stamford, CT, and also owns a Kings in Greenwich and a Balducci's in Riverside.
It's unclear exactly why this location is closing. It's possible another tenant expressed interest in this site. DeCicco & Sons, a growing chain of gourmet supermarkets, is preparing to open in a former Stop & Shop at the other end of Greenwich, so there's definitely interest in these small supermarket buildings.
This deli setup is fully left over from A&P, so it feels a little awkward for an ACME. I assume they've known for a while that they weren't keeping this store long-term, so they haven't put in any further work to update it.
Cheese, which it appears used to be more of a service department (probably in the early days of the Fresh renovation under A&P, ca. 2005 or 2010).
Meat and seafood on the back wall. It looks like some of this refrigeration might have been painted, but it's on the older side.
You can see the store isn't in bad shape, but it hasn't gotten quite as good maintenance as many other ACMEs.
Bakery in the back-left corner.
Again, all of these fixtures are left over from A&P, so it's a very unusual setup for ACME.
Frozen foods in the second-to-last aisle, with dairy in the last aisle.
It'll be interesting to see if there's another tenant lined up for this space, and if so, whether it's another supermarket. I imagine anyone moving in would want to do pretty significant renovations.
These dairy cases look fairly new, but I don't know if they were installed during ACME's time here. To me, they certainly look like the same type of cases ACME and Albertsons Companies' other brands have put in elsewhere.
And that's all for this store at the moment, but I'll definitely return if another operator opens up here! Here's a look at this weekend's other posts...

  1. Sorry to see a classic location bite the dust! Looks like the Stop & Shop was remodeled somewhat recently and they do have the advantage of sharing a parking lot with other stores, including a liquor store. The ACME is the lone store on the property with an impossibly small parking lot. I do think ACME has a better price strategy than Stop & Shop but doesn't have the history in the area as S&S.

  2. Also, surprised to see Riverside hasn't been upgraded to Quality Built especially with small wall space allowing for a quick swap. I do think that the store may be doomed since the bakery cases were never changed out. Although my West New store is still all A&P and I really doubt that store is closing anytime soon. Business there just seems to grow and grow.
