Original Grocery Tenant: Harvest Co-Op Market
Though the Harvest Co-Op was in business for a longer time, their tenure at 3815 Washington was short -- they were the first tenant in this space when the building was constructed in 2012, and this and the other location both closed in 2018. I visited a year later, in 2019. They were previously in a smaller, older space at 57 South St in Jamaica Plain.
It wasn't too easy to see inside, but there were a couple places you could catch a glimpse of the former supermarket's interior. Here, you can see the former deli/prepared foods area. Produce was in front with the grocery aisles to the left. Because the store didn't close that long ago, you can actually still see some good pictures on Google Maps, such as the grand aisle, the wine department, and the grocery aisles. It looked like quite a nice store, and it's a shame it closed.
I don't know for sure, but the store appears to have been rather small, in the roughly 6000-10,000 square foot range.
Address: 3815 Washington St, Forest Hills, MA
A week ago, we saw the Dorchester Food Co-Op, and I mentioned it was the only food coop in Boston. But there were previously multiple, and you can read more extensively about them here. Harvest Co-Op was the last survivor, as several of the other independent coops merged to form Harvest with two locations. One was at Central Square in Cambridge, to the north of Boston, and the other was here in the Forest Hills section of Jamaica Plain.Opened: 2012
Closed: 2018
Later Tenants: non-grocery tenants
Photographed: June 8, 2019

That's all for this Harvest Co-Op Market, and my usual spiel of "I'll be sure to go back once something new opens in the space" doesn't quite work here because it's now occupied by a private school -- not exactly a tenant that interests me particularly. Long before this building was so much as a twinkle in a real estate developer's eye, there was another grocery store not far from here, which you can check out here. Tomorrow, we're headed just north of the Forest Hills T stop to see the small independent grocer now serving this southern part of Jamaica Plain!
