The last location of Brother's Supermarket also happens to be the first to open -- roughly some time in the early 2000s, I believe, but I can't pin down an opening more specific than that. Around 2008, they opened a second location at Upham's Corner, then a third in Randolph (a suburb) in 2017 which later that year they sold to America's Food Basket, then a fourth at Fields Corner in 2020, and a fifth in Roslindale in 2023. Unfortunately, I don't know much about this particular location's history other than that the building was before 1938 and that it wasn't a chain grocery store prior to Brother's.
All of the Brother's locations are quite small, but this one is the smallest at just 2700 square feet. I would bet that the entrance door for this storefront was originally on the corner where the Brother's logo is now, but the entrance these days is on the right side of the store. (The two lighter red awnings to the right are for Sun Pizza, a neighboring business.) It's also possible Brother's combined two storefronts here.
The exterior pictures are a combination of 2019 and 2021 shots, but inside is all 2021. I didn't take pictures when I was here in 2019, but I don't believe much changed between my two visits.
The aisles run side-to-side, with checkouts on the right side. Meat and cold cuts are on the back wall, with the large butcher counter on the left side of the store, and produce, dairy, and frozen on the front wall.
I don't remember exactly how many aisles there are, but I believe only three or four.
Below we're seeing dairy and frozen in the first aisle on the front wall of the store.
That's all for this (very short) look at Brother's at Grove Hall, and on Monday we're seeing the next two stores of our Dorchester group -- the Stop & Shop just around the corner from this store, and a former Stop & Shop just a block away from here. Come back to check it out!
