Corrado's Market
Opened: 1976We're returning again to the Corrado's Market in Clifton, and this time, I have some good news to report! That's definitely not the tone I was taking the last time I wrote about this store. But it's begun a much-needed revitalization, which the Corrados say was several years delayed. It's also no secret that the chain has struggled -- only this Clifton location remains, and in the past year or two, they've even had trouble filling the shelves in this store.
Now, things are looking up. The store is still in rough shape, but updates -- the Corrados say -- are coming. The produce department, when I visited last month, was full. And the overstock items from other stores were gone. Now, the shelves are mostly full with straightforward grocery items, including Parade brand products from General Trading in nearby Carlstadt.
It looks like the walls were stripped of the previous signage and painted. The refrigerator cases on the back wall have been removed and replaced with grocery shelving, and dairy has been condensed with meat and cold cuts in the last aisle.
And the grocery aisles are once again fully stocked, or very close to it, although the category signage isn't quite right. I can only assume that'll change as the store continues through its renovation.
It's good to see the store looking fully stocked again!
There's still quite a ways to go, though, as most of the frozen foods and meat departments were still empty when I visited last month.
It looks like the selection, especially of perishables, has been cut down -- probably a good call, since I'd be surprised if this store ever gets back to the sales volume it once had. That said, a well-done renovation and a good reset of the whole store could definitely bring in plenty more customers.
On the other hand, if the store has been in rough shape for long enough, it might be a major uphill battle to win back any customers. It's been a place that's all but impossible to do a full food shopping at for several years, and there's no shortage of other nearby grocers.
The cheese and olive counter up at the front is fully stocked, too.
As you can see in these pictures, there were almost no other shoppers in the store when I was there. Again, it's gonna be an uphill battle to get customers back in.
Seafood was closed but has reopened, the deli is operational, and the bakery and liquor store remain closed.
The former pizza counter and seating area has been replaced by some grocery shelving, but it's not clear just yet what will go in here.
I'm cautiously optimistic about this store. I loved this store in its previous life, but there's a long way to go to get back to those days. We'll see if the Corrados can pull it off! Also this weekend...
