Food Universe Marketplace
Opened: May 2024There's been yet another brand change here at 937 Lincoln Avenue. The store dates back to the early 1960s, when it was built as an A&P. It stayed under the A&P umbrella but cycled through several different brands all the way up until the 2015 bankruptcy, when it became a Key Food and quickly switched to SuperFresh once Key Food had secured the rights to the SuperFresh name from A&P as well. In the spring of 2024, the store's previous owners sold it to Jose Olivo, who also owns a Food Universe in nearby Paterson and a handful of others. It then switched from SuperFresh to Food Universe. Over the past year and a half or so, the new owners have made some minor changes but the store has never looked better.
Let's return for a full look at the interior. It's still outfitted with the decor and general setup it had when it was SuperFresh, but there have been a couple of updates. One of those is a new bulk coffee section right up at the front, next to the floral department which has been moved over to the front wall.
The produce department has been expanded a bit up to the front, and it's been fully reset.
The deli has also been redone with a new, much larger, service counter. Under the previous owners, the original large deli counter was downsized and converted to a self-service case (with a deli clerk still available for special orders).
Now, the deli is much larger and full-service, and looks like it was back in the earlier days of SuperFresh.
The produce department is sharp and well-appointed.
There's a clear focus on produce here these days, as is true in the Paterson location too.
I love the merchandising here! Very appealing.
But the whole store is extraordinarily clean and orderly, too.
This is a neighborhood supermarket, and one of a handful of small grocers in Glen Rock (though Kilroy's appears to be temporarily closed). But just half a mile away in Fair Lawn is a brand-new ShopRite that's nearly three times the size of this store. That ShopRite opened a little under a year before this store was sold, so it's possible the new ShopRite reduced the business here enough that the owners had to sell.
Looking across the back wall of the store...
A year and a half in, this store is in excellent shape under Food Universe, and most of the response from customers seems to be positive so far. Several reviews and social media posts online note an improvement under new ownership.
Deli/bakery is in the front left corner, with produce in the rest of the first aisle. Dairy is on the back wall, with frozen foods in the first aisle. Meat and cold cuts are in the last aisle.
The grocery aisles, too, are pristine and well-stocked. It definitely seems like the new management has high standards for this store.

I don't believe my original SuperFresh tour included a look at the liquor store, which is connected to the supermarket. So let's take a look inside!
It's a beautiful, extensive liquor store. I don't know whether it's owned by the same people as the supermarket.
As you can see, the design of the supermarket carries over into the liquor store. Notice the columns with the same stone tile that's in the supermarket.
The new owners have made some small changes to the front-end, including replacing the registers and adding some self-checkouts. The small cafe area has been removed, too, with customer service moved into that corner.
It's great to see this store looking as good as ever, even as it approaches its 70th birthday. Lots more to see this weekend, too, so check it all out here!
