Amazon Fresh closing all stores

Amazon Fresh announced this week that it will close all of its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores. In a blog post, Amazon said that "various locations" will reopen as Whole Foods, but no further detail has been given yet. It's no secret that the chain has been troubled basically since the start, and it's been retooled many times. Still, the stores never took off, and have been struggling for at least months (and, in all likelihood, from the beginning). Now, all Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores will close tomorrow, February 1, 2026. Let's revisit a couple of the stores that are closing, plus some more Amazon Fresh info. Scroll down to the bottom of this post for the full list of closing stores.

Lodi

Opened: August 23, 2024
Previous Tenants: Kmart
Location: 2 Memorial Dr, Lodi, NJ
Photographed: January 28, 2026

See the opening of the Lodi Amazon Fresh here.

This 40,000 square foot store was all but doomed from the start. Located in part of a former Kmart, it is located directly next door to an ALDI -- as in, it shares a wall with the ALDI -- and is about two blocks from a much larger ShopRite. When I revisited this store on Wednesday, it was packed. (Same goes for Paramus and Woodland Park -- far more crowded than the stores ever were before, with customers presumably drawn in by the clearance discounts.)
Here in Lodi, perhaps in anticipation of the crowds, a barrier had been constructed across the front-end so that all traffic coming into the registers would come from the left side of the store.
On Wednesday, the stores had marked down most merchandise 50%, with discounts increasing since.
It's almost impossible to predict which stores Amazon will convert to Whole Foods, but if I had to guess, I would say this one probably won't become a Whole Foods. There aren't any Whole Foods in the immediate area (the closest being about three miles north in Paramus), but Lodi and some of the towns around it don't strike me as core Whole Foods territory. If it doesn't become a Whole Foods, I also don't anticipate it becoming any other supermarket because of the tough location close to ALDI and ShopRite.

The deli and prepared foods departments had already closed in these stores on Wednesday.
The sushi counters had closed months ago, and sad signage on the former sushi counters in each store (at least several weeks old, if not several months) still insists that new sushi options are coming.

Paramus

Opened: July 21, 2022
Previous Tenants: Fairway Market (2009-2020)
Location: 30 E Ridgewood Ave, Paramus, NJ
Photographed: January 28, 2026

See the opening of the Paramus Amazon Fresh here.

Paramus was the first Amazon Fresh store to open in New Jersey, back in 2022 about two years after the first store opened in California. It's a former Fairway that was open for 11 years in the back of the Fashion Center Mall, one of Paramus's many malls.
When this store opened, it had the "just walk out" technology, which allowed you to do your normal grocery shopping and then leave without going through a checkout. (Amazon developed this tech for its own stores, but after removing it from their stores, is trying to sell it to other stores.)
That system was removed here when the store was remodeled and re-formatted in late 2024, so you'll notice the decor here matches Lodi and Woodland Park but is different from the original setup, which you can see in the link to the store's opening above.
The reset was pretty minor, save for a quick decor swap and removing the service meat and seafood counters in favor of more dairy cases.
Clearly, this store had cleared out a bit in anticipation of its closure, but it does look like some fixtures and shelving might have been removed prior to the closure preparation. This store is 50,000 square feet, so it's not huge but plenty large.
As an aside, these stores still had circulars that ended on Tuesday, and it looked like that was the last circular they'll have.
The former meat and seafood counters, which used to be to the right of the bakery cases here, have been removed. More dairy coolers were put in their place, and packaged meat and seafood are in the back-right corner.
As we saw in Woodland Park a while ago, large spaces in the coolers here were filled by promotional posters like this one. But actually, those posters were removed from Woodland Park a while ago -- not sure why. That store is larger than this one by about 10,000 square feet.
This decor is much more exciting and colorful than the original decor, although there is something sleek and refined about the original simple decor.
Customer service and cafe in the front-right corner. The cafes became irrelevant pretty quickly, as many stores didn't continue stocking ready-to-eat prepared foods in the deli.
Amazon Fresh did meaningfully lower its prices during the time it was in business. Still, they weren't quite low enough to make a difference. Check out this poster advertising the six-pack of 20 oz Gatorade for $6.99. At the time of writing, an eight-pack at ShopRite is on sale for $7 discounted from $8.99, and at LIDL, the same eight-pack is on sale for $6.99 discounted from $7.99. Paramus has both a ShopRite and a LIDL, along with a very long list of other grocers. Higher prices aren't necessarily a problem (see Whole Foods), but there just wasn't enough else to draw customers into the stores.
But the clearance sales were definitely bringing in the people. Check out this packed front-end!

Woodland Park

Opened: November 7, 2024
Previous Tenants: Pathmark > Fairway Market
Location: 1510 US-46, Woodland Park, NJ
Photographed: January 28, 2026

See more on the Woodland Park Amazon Fresh here.

Woodland Park's Krispy Kreme donut stand was dark when I visited on Wednesday.
I've been to this store only a handful of times but every time it was absolutely deserted (while the ShopRite across the highway is always packed, and SuperFresh next door seems to get at least decent traffic). ALDI has also recently opened in Totowa, and LIDL will open next week in Totowa too.
Sure, except for the part where they're about to leave...
Woodland Park opened without service meat and seafood, meaning that the deli was the only service counter in the store.
This store, to me, is the most likely candidate of these three North Jersey locations to be converted to Whole Foods. It strikes me as the best location, the best area for a Whole Foods, and the least close to an existing Whole Foods.
Here's an example of a truly lower price: this Clorox cleaner with bleach here is $4.99, and $5.99 at ShopRite. But a generic one at LIDL is $2.39.
This store still looks brand-new, and that's because it basically is. It's only about 14 months old.
And you can see that some people really were stocking up. I have to assume that this man with the cases of Coke must be buying this for a small business like a convenience store or restaurant, right? Right???

Langhorne

Opened: September 26, 2024
Previous Tenants: non-grocery tenants
Location: 2424 Lincoln Hwy, Langhorne, PA
Photographed: January 30, 2026
The Langhorne store hasn't been featured on The Market Report previously, as my first (and only) visit was actually just yesterday. It opened in the fall of 2024 in what appears to have been a furniture store previously.
While I don't have any interior photos, and I wanted a tour, I wasn't going to wait on line outside in the 13-degree weather just to get some pictures of a supermarket!

Broomall

Opened: September 8, 2022
Previous Tenants: GIANT Food Stores
Location: 2924 Springfield Blvd, Broomall, PA
Photographed: January 30, 2026
Now we're headed to two more PA stores we haven't been to yet: Broomall and Willow Grove. Broomall actually replaced a GIANT that moved out to a new location in 2019. Amazon Fresh opened here in 2022, and like Paramus, opened with the first decor package and was redone in 2024. Despite the fact that the store is more than three years old, a "now open" banner is still out by the street on the large sign you can see above.
This one didn't quite have the crowds (or the wait to get in) of Langhorne, so let's check out the interior.
By yesterday afternoon, this store and the other Amazon Fresh locations seem to have been pretty cleared out. Items were discounted 50-75%, though there weren't all that many left on the shelves.
This second decor package was really quite nice. The appearance of the stores wasn't really the problem here.
Produce is in the front-right corner, with meat and seafood (no service counters) in the back-right corner. Dairy lines the back wall, with bakery and deli in the last aisle on the left side.
It looks like they did previously have service meat and seafood counters in the spot occupied by the dairy department in the picture above.
The new GIANT is about a mile and a half to the east, and there's an ACME and a Whole Foods a mile west, plus another ACME about two miles south. Because of the proximity to the existing Newtown Square Whole Foods, I have to assume this one won't become a Whole Foods.
As you can see, the grocery aisles were pretty cleaned out, though there were still plenty of people roaming in search of deals.
This store has a beer and wine aisle on the left side towards the front, which the New Jersey stores didn't.
Here, the checkout line started at the front-end and ran all the way down the last aisle to the back wall, then turned and went about halfway across the back wall. These stores clearly weren't designed to really do much volume, so when they're much more crowded like this, they're not prepared the way a bigger store like a GIANT or ShopRite would be.
Speaking of the size, this store is about 40,000 square feet.
The deli and prepared foods departments closed a few days prior, and were already emptied out. Here, there was some lunch meat left in the deli counter, but it wasn't open.
A look at the checkout line snaking all the way to the back of the store...
Well, I wasn't buying anything, so I didn't need to wait on that line. So let's head back to the other side of the store, which is much less crowded, and get out of here...
...plus this very impressive wall of Coke at the front of the store.

Willow Grove

Opened: November 7, 2024
Previous Tenants: Barnes & Noble
Location: 102 Park Ave, Willow Grove, PA
Photographed: January 30, 2026
Moving on to the Willow Grove store, a smaller, 31,000 square foot supermarket that opened in a former Barnes & Noble in 2024.
Here, produce is on the left side, with meat and seafood in the back-left corner. Dairy lines the back wall with deli-bakery in the last aisle on the right side.
This store is sandwiched in between a GIANT across the street to the north and an ALDI to the south. Sprouts, The Fresh Market, another GIANT, Grocery Outlet, ACME, and George's Market (which has been renovated and expanded since that post) are all within three miles. But no Whole Foods in the immediate vicinity -- making this, in my opinion, a prime candidate for conversion.
A look across the front-end shows just how small the register area is in this store, which isn't too far from typical. These Amazon Fresh stores on the whole never seemed to do much volume at all, so there probably was never a need for more than one or two registers.
Here, too, the shelves were pretty bare. I waited to get into this store, but only for a minute.
Savings for sure, but there aren't many left by this point.
But here, too, deal-seekers were out in full force, checking out what was left on the shelves. With everything as expensive as it is, who can blame them.
This is an attractive, modern facility and would make for a great, if somewhat small, Whole Foods.
I'm not certain of this, but my general impression is that the PA Amazon Fresh stores might have done a bit better than the NJ ones.
Here, too, a long checkout line snaked all the way through the deli and prepared foods areas to the back of the store.
It looks like the deli had previously been closed here, though, as the deli counter was covered with this decal that presumably wasn't put up just for the closure.
The skylights are a nice touch here, too.
And a look at the front-end, looking deceptively peaceful (everyone was lined up behind me in the below picture...)
All in all, these closures (while significant) don't exactly come as a surprise to anyone who's followed the development of this initiative. Still, this probably isn't the last we're going to hear from Amazon on grocery, one way or another. Here's the full list of stores closing this weekend, along with some more info about locations that were planned but never opened. Also this weekend...
