Happy Monday! Just next to the Shaw's in Ellsworth is a Hannaford, opened in the early 00s in a former Shop 'n Save. I'm a little fuzzy on the history here. This mall had a department store, owned by various chains over the years, and a Shop 'n Save supermarket. In the early 00s, Shop 'n Save became Hannaford. It looks like this could've been the original supermarket, with either Shop 'n Save or Hannaford moving to the current building at some point.
The layout is standard Hannaford. The grand aisle is on the right side, with produce in the front-right corner and cheese/deli in the back-right. Bakery is opposite in the island, and meat/seafood are at the back. Dairy is on the back wall and frozen is on the left side of the store. Here, pharmacy and HABA are not in the first few aisles, but instead in the front-left corner.
This store has the latest Hannaford decor package, although it looks like the latest renovation here wasn't as extensive as some.
A dedicated cheese island here is a nice touch, bringing the selection slightly higher-end.
Another more deluxe touch: this expanded Kitchen department in the back-right corner.
The bakery is in the island separating the grand aisle from the rest of the grocery aisles.
Like the Shaw's, this is a pretty standard Hannaford and, other than those couple deluxe touches over in the deli, there's not a whole lot exciting about this store. It's definitely more colorful decor than Shaw's, which is a bit monochromatic.
My sense is that this Hannaford might be slightly higher-volume than the Shaw's. It's roughly the same size and has roughly the same offerings.
Beer is in the front half of the last aisle.
And pharmacy/HABA in the front-left corner rather than the first few aisles is something I feel like I see more often in the New York stores than the New England ones, but I've definitely seen both setups in both places.
Looking across the front-end...
That wraps up our trip to Ellsworth! Now it's time to head down towards Mount Desert Island. Let's check out an independent grocer between here and there tomorrow!
