This weekend's posts include two rather strange ones. Here on Staten Island, a short-lived Asian Food Markets has new signage up for "Key Food Island" Supermarket, which (as far as I can tell) isn't related in any way to, well, Key Food. It's also unclear what exactly is happening with this property. Key Food Island Corp. was formed in the spring of 2025 at this location, but doesn't seem to be operating here (yet?). While there's very little information on Key Food Island -- most searching just brings you to Key Food -- there is a Facebook page and website that could be related, if slightly suspect with no real contact info and Walmart branded grocery items.
I couldn't get a good look inside the space, but as of late March, nothing really appeared to be happening other than the removal of some of Asian Food Markets' shelving and fixtures. It's odd to see full signage up outside with nothing happening inside at all. According to this notice posted to the door, the premises had been seized from a tenant called Hanukkah Pay Corp. That appears to be an entity started a couple months before Key Food Island Corp. with no apparent ties to the Key Food Island company.
I don't know what to make of this, but it's possible Key Food Island could actually reopen this space as a supermarket. (I assume it's possible they actually did operate as a supermarket here for an extraordinarily brief time, but it didn't seem that way when I visited and I have to think that's extremely unlikely.) I have no answers, but the situation is definitely intriguing. So as always, if you have intel I don't, please send it my way! In the meantime...
