The Independent Edition: Jamaica Plain

Now that we've finished Jamaica Plain's main grocers, let's check out some of the small stores around the neighborhood! The majority of these are around Egleston Square on Washington Street, which is a bit of disputed territory (some might call it Jamaica Plain, others will call it Roxbury). To me, anything to the southwest of Columbus Avenue is Jamaica Plain, but the other side of the street is Roxbury. Anyway...

Egleston Square

Yessenia's Market
Opened: 1992
Owner: Rafael Pena
Previous Tenants: unknown
Cooperative: none
Location: 3348 Washington St, Jamaica Plain, MA
Photographed: November 13, 2021
This is the farthest-south independent grocer we're seeing on Washington Street, at the corner of Green Street where we saw Green Basket. A block north is Ruggiero's.

Papi's Market
Opened: 2018
Owner: unknown
Previous Tenants: De Leon Market > Egleston's Market
Cooperative: none
Location: 3145 Washington St, Jamaica Plain, MA
Photographed: November 13, 2021
Papi's Market has only been here since 2018, but the storefront has held a grocery store for a long time before that, probably decades. I didn't go in, but you can catch a glimpse of the interior from the front window.

10 Eleven Market
Opened: 2018
Owner: unknown
Previous Tenants: assorted non-grocery tenants
Cooperative: none
Location: 3122 Washington St, Jamaica Plain, MA
Photographed: November 13, 2021
What's better than 7-Eleven? 10 Eleven!

Compadres Meat Market
Opened: 2011
Owner: unknown
Previous Tenants: assorted non-grocery tenants
Cooperative: none
Location: 3105 Washington St, Jamaica Plain, MA
Photographed: November 13, 2021
This stretch of Washington Street has six independent grocers in just eight blocks (including Ruggiero's). Roxbury and neighboring parts of Jamaica Plain have very few supermarkets, so these smaller stores are probably filling the need there.

Peraviana Market
Opened: unknown; before 2007
Owner: unknown
Previous Tenants: unknown
Cooperative: none
Location: 3095 Washington St, Jamaica Plain, MA
Photographed: July 26, 2019
This is the only grocery store of this bunch I photographed back in 2019, and it's right near the corner of Columbus Ave and Washington St. This looks like it might be the largest on this part of Washington except for Ruggiero's, at about 2000 square feet.

Salcedo Market
Open: ca. 2020-ca. 2023
Owner: unknown
Previous Tenants: Columbus Market > Gemelas Market
Later Tenants: El Cruce Market
Cooperative: none
Location: 1909 Columbus Ave, Jamaica Plain, MA
Photographed: November 13, 2021
One block north of the corner of Washington Street on Columbus Ave is this grocery store, which had been the Columbus Market for a long time (check out that sign!) and later became Gemelas Market, then Salcedo Market, and is now El Cruce Market. This store puts the corner in corner store, as it's a triangle and is just 1000 square feet.

Stonybrook

City Feed & Supply
Opened: 2000
Owner: David Warner
Previous Tenants: unknown
Cooperative: none
Location: 66 Boylston St, Jamaica Plain, MA
Photographed: July 26, 2019
Across the T tracks from the strip on Washington Street is this tiny store and cafe, the other location of City Feed and Supply. This was the original one, and it opened in 2000, later closing briefly for renovations. The store is a small but upscale specialty market and cafe. And that's all for Jamaica Plain! Come back tomorrow to see what's up next.

  1. Although it would have been even better had that 10 Eleven market actually been at 1011 Washington Street, but I guess we can't have everything ;)
