News Roundup: August 2025

For this weekend's special coverage, let's take a look at some of the New York City-area grocery news -- because there's been a lot happening! As always, follow me at news.marketreportblog.com to hear breaking news first. A mechanical note: use the menu bar at the top to filter recent posts if you'd like to see only the recent Boston-area stores, new store openings and other news, and updates.

Now, onto this weekend's updates. First for a look at the bigger news...

Wakefern acquires Morton Williams

Wakefern Food Corp., the cooperative that runs ShopRite stores, has acquired NYC chain Morton Williams outright. It seems that the stores will be corporately-owned, joining about 100 other Wakefern-owned ShopRite and Price Rite locations. Read more on Food Trade News, and see the discussion over on RetailWatchers here.

Northeast Grocery might be up for sale

Northeast Grocery, the Schenectady-based owner of Price Chopper, Market 32, and Tops, has been exploring a sale of the company, per Reuters. A spokesperson for the company says that's not true, and that their relationship with a bank currently advising them isn't specifically about selling the company. Again per the initial Reuters report, other supermarket chains and private equity firms are interested, inviting speculation of a purchase by Kroger, Albertsons Companies, Ahold Delhaize, or C&S. See the discussion over on RetailWatchers.

LIDL opens more new stores

The fast-growing discount chain has opened several new stores and is working on even more. Here's a look at their latest locations:
See my visit to Hackensack, along with another store in progress, here and other recent LIDL openings here. Now onto some more local news...

ACME closing CT store

ACME is closing one of its four Connecticut locations this fall, as reported by CT Insider. I've toured this store and will post pictures when I get a chance.

Longtime Queens grocer closes

Scaturro Supermarkets, once a small chain of New York City outer borough supermarkets, is down to just one store after closing its Woodhaven, Queens location on July 26, per Queens Gazette. But even as this store closes, a new independent supermarket called Avocado Supermarket has opened immediately next door in a former discount store.

Williamsburg gourmet supermarket closing

The City Acres Market at 11 Broadway in Williamsburg, Brooklyn is up for sale and closing. City Acres stores in Queens and Manhattan don't seem to be affected. This store was originally affiliated with Key Food branded as Urban Market, but after it was sold several years ago, it switched to Retail Grocers Group/Fine Fare and changed its name to City Acres.

Key Food works on two NYC relocations

In Norwood, the Bronx, a Key Food is putting on the finishing touches after moving next door. And down in Flatbush, an old-school location is preparing to do the same. The store at 786 Flatbush Ave is moving right next door to the slightly larger space at 780 Flatbush, a former dollar store. See the Norwood location here.

Years delayed, Food Bazaar opens a food hall in a Bronx location

Food Bazaar's largest store -- spanning over 80,000 square feet at the Bronx Terminal Market -- has opened a food hall next to the supermarket that was originally slated to open in 2020 but was delayed due to the pandemic. Check out the new space (and the food!) here.

Tomorrow: ASG is on a roll with new locations and rebranding

A preview of what's to come tomorrow: the Long Island-based Associated Supermarket Group has been working hard on a number of new and rebranded locations across the city (that link will work tomorrow). We'll take a look at a number of their new stores tomorrow!

    1. I doubt they'd take it with the tiny parking lot.

    2. Really? But that Acme is disappearing. That’s why I asked Lidl to open.

  3. Sad to see an ACME go but wow that place is small. Strange that two tiny supermarkets lasted as long as they did right across the street from each other.

LIDL was voted the best supermarket by Newsweek readers! Beat out Wegmans, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. LIDL can be pretty rough around the edges but their prices are nothing short of miraculous especially in these crazy times. Last week I had a $10 of $60 order coupon. Nearly everything I bought was on sale and then I got an extra $10 off. Love LIDL!

  4. I hope Lidl opens a store in South Philly soon....the Aldi I go to the prices have gradually risen on the things I buy. They were supposed to open one on on the site of an old factory, but last I checked, the factory was still standing
