New Shop Fair in Yonkers Brings Increased Competition

A new Shop Fair Supermarket in downtown Yonkers, NY opened on Friday, bringing a fourth big-name supermarket to the center city area. Owner Alex Guzman also owns Key Food supermarkets in Jamaica, Queens and Valley Stream, Long Island.

The store features a seafood department, an in-store butcher, and a coffee shop with a bakery and juice bar. Taking the space of a long-vacant former department store, the Shop Fair Supermarket joins a nearby Compare Foods Supermarket — just four doors away.

Compare Foods, which had previously operated under the Met Foodmarkets banner, recently expanded their produce department and added a juice bar. Two doors down from Compare Foods is the Williams Farm Market, a greengrocer. The new Shop Fair is three blocks east of a ShopRite and four blocks west of a Foodtown.

Yonkers is the second location for the Bulk n' Brew Coffee Company, joining a location in Guzman's Valley Stream store.

Shop Fair is a group of independent supermarket owners under the Retail Grocers Group, which also operates Fine Fare Supermarkets. The Shop Fair group was created in 2016.
