Snapshot: Cherry Valley - West Hempstead, NY

A&E Supermarket Group, who we've talked about before here, owns a chain of supermarkets under the banners City Fresh Market and Cherry Valley Marketplace. We're here on Long Island to check out a large store that started out as a Pathmark that converted to a Super Compare Foods under A&E around 2010. A&E later switched it to Cherry Valley Marketplace. Actually, the store is located in the Cherry Valley Shopping Center, making me wonder if this was where the name came from.

The store is almost unrecognizable as a former Pathmark by now. The Pathmark space was divided between Cherry Valley and a Rite Aid to the left.

The sign is very attractive, although I'm not sure about the red-on-red effect here. In fact, the sign has since been switched to white lettering.

The store competes with a larger Stop & Shop nearby, but Stop & Shop doesn't have the ethnic selections that Cherry Valley does.

  1. The red façade is unique; I like it! I bet you're right that the white lettering looks much better, though. Glad they realized that and took action.

    1. Yes! The facade actually used to be beige stucco, so the red lettering looked good on that. My father pointed out that the red wood texture they use is probably supposed to be cherry wood, which would make sense! Here's what the store now looks like (so nice!): https://s3-media1.fl.yelpcdn.com/bphoto/Eq6baZuT8dwrOLcoC1vqyQ/o.jpg
