Snapshot: Kings Food Markets - Montclair, NJ

Montclair, NJ is home to lots of good restaurants, a performing arts venue, some of the best public schools in the state, and -- the real attraction for most -- three supermarkets. The township was also home to a Pathmark until the 2015 bankruptcy; the location in the Lackawanna Plaza is slated to be replaced by Lidl. Two of the three other stores (ACME and this Kings) are in Upper Montclair, a neighborhood with its own character that's decidedly separate from the main downtown, which included the Pathmark and a Whole Foods.
I couldn't put my finger on it, but something about this storefront just looks funny. Maybe it's the huge awning combined with the tiny sign, or maybe it's the randomly spaced windows, but something about it just isn't appealing to me. However, it is a nice store.
Many Kings locations were previously larger chain stores, but I don't know about this one's history. It's possible it was built as an early Kings location, too. It's clearly been expanded many times to its present 18,000 square feet. The store is located at 650 Valley Rd, Montclair, NJ.

  1. THREE supermarkets?! Hoo boy, I'm headed up there immediately! Why don't they ever try putting *that* in the travel brochures?

    1. Now, hold on to your hat, but... legend has it that Jersey City actually has a whopping 33 grocery stores. You didn't hear that from me, pal.

  2. I know that many Kings were Stop & Shops before they pulled out of the area in 1980. Perhaps this was one of them?

    1. Good point. JoshAustin610 (joshaustin610.blogspot.com) doesn't have a Stop & Shop listed in Montclair, but it's possible. I could definitely see that.

  3. No. It was not a Shop & Stop previously.

    1. Thanks for the confirmation! Yep, I think only Millburn, West Caldwell, Hillsdale, Garwood, and Parsippany were Stop & Shops. West Caldwell and Parsippany have since closed.
