Update: Stop & Shop - Allwood, Clifton, NJ

Stop & Shop
Opened: 2009, 2001 in former building
Previous Tenants: Grand Union in older building on same property
Location: 1189 Broad St, Clifton, NJ
Photographed: June 2021
A remodel is underway at the Stop & Shop at Broad Street and Allwood Road in Clifton, where we previously took a quick look at the store as it was in 2019. At the time of my more recent drive-by, the exterior appeared to be mid-paint job, with the sign temporarily replaced with a banner (which oddly enough has the chain's older fruitbowl logo). The remodel at this 53,000 square foot store is in direct response to the extensive renovation at the ShopRite of Brookdale which is just over a mile south on Broad Street. We're also checking in with their progress today, plus see the newly converted SuperFresh (previously Compare Foods) in downtown Passaic! Here's what's up next.

  1. Ohhhh... I'm going to take a ride out there this weekend to check it out! This will be the very first Stop and Shop that I pass regularly that is getting remodeled. And even though I pass this store often, I've only ever been in it one time. Checked it out shortly after it opened and, sorry to say, never went back. Just hated the décor and lighting. The color scheme and the same signage for every department felt so "discount store" to me. Guess I was a little bitter too that they tour down the Grand Union which I miss to this very day. I've never been a big fan of any décor packages that Stop and Shop has had over the years but I do LOVE their latest package which I assume is going in here.

Interesting how three grocers in this area are spending some serious cash remodeling their stores. I haven't known of any ShopRites to get such an extensive remodel as I saw in your Brookdale post. Drop ceiling taken out? Wow! And Acme's Montclair store got one of the most extensive remodels of any store in the whole chain. Even brand-new shopping carts! Nice to see Acme doing so well while being in close proximity to these big competitors!

    1. Yes, I'm no great fan of the Stop & Shop decor over the years either. I think the latest decor package is quite nice, though execution matters. I saw it in the newly-built Mahopac (NY) and Newton (MA) stores, and they're gorgeous, but a friend sent me pictures from one of the remodeled Hartford area stores and oh man, it looked really bad. They basically painted the walls white and put the gray signs up (not even backlit), and they didn't change the 2000s Super Stop & Shop-era flooring.

And yes, there's serious money going into this area -- but I've been traveling around quite a bit and there's serious money going into grocery stores all over. I think supermarket owners are investing a lot of the extra money made in the early days of the coronavirus in order to get ahead of their competitors.

    2. My guess is that it depends on what they feel works for the store. We’ve got the backlit treatment on all the signs and some different color schemes at work too.

We did put all the new signage up on the outside; we even added a sign that says “serving our communities since 1914”’ or something like that.

From what I’ve been told the grand reopening is set for some time in the next few weeks; if I can find out more I’ll let you guys know. And like I said, if you come by and spot me (I’m not easy to miss) feel free to say hi.

    3. That sounds great, thank you for the info! I don't know if I'm going to be able to get back and actually visit the store anytime soon, but I'll definitely check out the remodel at some point.

    4. Remodel is done. We did do the grand reopening on the weekend of the 13-15th and drew lots of crowds. Had some decent freebies too.

People still aren’t used to the store yet but we’ve done all that we needed to. Come check it out!

    5. Thank you! I certainly will this fall but unfortunately I am out of state for a few months. I am looking forward to see it -- I saw pictures on Winsight Grocery Business and the store certainly looks fantastic.
