Photo of the Day!

One of my all-time favorite shots is also one of my earliest. This photo was taken at CitiGrocer, 117 Spring St, Elizabeth, NJ, clearly an excellent place to buy olive oil... Now, notice that this is only the Portuguese and Brazilian olive oil section. There are also separately Spanish, Latin, Italian, and generic olive oil selections -- in addition!

Many supermarkets reuse old carts from other stores. Some stores have their own fleet of ancient carts. This cart, from between 1976 and 2002 (but likely the earlier end of that), was spotted at the Elizabeth, NJ ShopRite . I don't think Village ShopRite has used those coin-deposit carts in my lifetime! This store also had at least one of these carts...

When you own a supermarket, the first impression of the store that your customers -- and prospective customers -- get is the outside, right? So the outside should draw customers in, in one way or another. It should never leave your customers wondering what the heck your store's name is. This photo was taken in November 2016 at the America's Food Basket (formerly known as Compare Foods) in Providence, RI. Click here for a full tour.

Universal Supermarket in Rahway, NJ will not run out of canned Goya beans anytime soon. Realistically, how does anyone actually take any of these cans, except maybe the bottom few rows, to buy?

What happens when you take over a store that has promotional signage around? Well, you can put words in people's mouths... Key Food Marketplace (now Superfresh), Fairview, NJ ...you can encourage people to shop elsewhere... Fine Fare Supermarket (now Bell Farms), Belleville, NJ ...but whatever you do, you can't do the job well. Key Food Fairview again.

We're back with another Photo of the Day, this time of a store that can't last much longer... This Pioneer in Manhattan, NYC has several strikes against it: It's in Manhattan. It's a Pioneer. It's ancient . But it's still a cool store.

Another Photo of the Day today, this time we're looking at the Glass Gardens-owned ShopRite of Linden, NJ, which I just happened to be at when the sky was very nice... Come back on Saturday for another full Store Tour!

Today's photo is just a cool shot of Superfood Marketplace in Allentown, PA. It's not a former pitched-roof Acme, as I originally thought, but still has an A-frame ceiling. You can check out the entire tour here . We're back to a full store tour tomorrow -- an independent store in White Plains, NY!

Welcome to the new Photo of the Day series! This is a way for me to reuse old stuff when I have nothing new ahem, show my favorite shots that I've taken at various stores. I might like them because they're good pictures (on the rare occasion I actually take a worthwhile picture), or I might like them because they show something interesting. To start off with, here's one of my favorites... It's a shot that a family member took at the grand opening of the Elizabeth Food Bazaar . So I can't take credit for it! Over and out for today. Come back on Wednesday for another Snapshot!
