Look Inside: Giant Food - H Street, Washington, DC

Giant Food Opened: ca. 2012 Previous Tenants:  none Location:  300 H St NE, Washington, DC Photographed:  June 2019 Contributor:  Alex D. Our contributor Alex D., who lived for a while in this neighborhood of Washington DC, shows us a few pictures of what was her local store when she was here. The store is located right behind Washington DC's Union Station, and about 3/4 of a mile northeast of the Capitol Building. With this small look inside, we see that it's a rather unremarkable version of this decor package, which would've been installed when the store opened around 2012. The store may have been renovated with the newer decor package I mentioned at Seven Corners , but I can't tell for sure. Looks like a nice polished concrete floor but this is a pretty flat version of the decor with a very bland ceiling. Well, that wraps up our rather short look at the DC area and tomorrow we have an even shorter look at the Baltimore area, with one store outside of the city her...

Snapshot: Safeway - King St, Alexandria, VA

Safeway Opened: 2015 on site of demolished Safeway Location:  3526 King St, Alexandria, VA Photographed:  February 2021 Contributor:  L.D. We arrive in Alexandria, VA, for our final suburban DC store. This 62,000 square foot Safeway was constructed around 2013-2015 on the site of a demolished former Safeway, and when the new store opened, it took up about twice the footprint of the former store. This is an interesting location in that it's on the second floor, with a parking garage underneath, and immediately next door to a Fresh Market. We have two more stores before we move along to our next group, and our second-to-last tomorrow is right in the center of things in urban DC. Come back to take a look inside!

Snapshot: Food Star Supermarket - Bailey's Crossroads, VA

Todos Supermarket Owner: Kevin Yun Opened:  2020 Cooperative:  none Location:  5521 Leesburg Pk, Bailey's Crossroads, VA Photographed:  December 2021 Contributor:  L. D. This local chain of international supermarkets made its home in the roughly 40,000 square foot former location of Toys R Us in early 2020. The store was announced in 2019, and sparked a fair amount of controversy -- much of it centering on what type of supermarket, exactly, Food Star is. See the comments here . I don't see many or any TRU remnants inside, nor do I see any secondhand items from other stores. It's a fairly generic , but plenty attractive, interior. This is unfortunately our single independent store in the DC area, and tomorrow we see our final DC suburb store over on The Market Report !

Snapshot: Giant Food - Seven Corners, Falls Church, VA

Giant Food Opened: 2020 Previous Tenants:  Shoppers Food (closed 2019) Location:  6360 Seven Corners Ctr, Falls Church, VA Photographed:  February 2021 Contributor:  L.D. The Giant Food at Seven Corners in Falls Church is the largest DC area we've seen so far, at over 70,000 square feet. It was a Shoppers Food until 2019, and Giant appears to have opened in 2020. It's a very attractive interior , too, designed by our friends at Off the Wall. Tomorrow we'll be heading to another interesting retail reuse, over on The Independent Edition !

Snapshot: Harris Teeter - Downtown, Falls Church, VA

Harris Teeter Opened: 2016 Location:  301 W Broad St, Falls Church, VA Photographed:  February 2021 Contributor:  L.D. Another DC area Harris Teeter (which is where I visited my very first Harris Teeter, way way back around 2010), this one in the ground floor of a new(-ish) development in downtown Falls Church. The development was constructed in 2015-16 with the Harris Teeter opening at the end of that period. Very hard to tell exactly how large this store is, since I can't get a good sense of the footprint from the air. But it might be somewhere in the neighborhood of 30,000 square feet. Tomorrow we're going to head about two miles southeast, within Falls Church, to check out the big chain in the DC area that we haven't seen yet. Come back on Monday to check it out!

Snapshot: Harris Teeter - Yorktown, Arlington, VA

Harris Teeter Opened: unknown Location:  2500 N Harrison St, Yorktown, Arlington, VA Photographed:  February 2021 Contributor:  L.D. Right across the street from yesterday's Safeway is this Harris Teeter, which looks like a mid-00s new build store. It's just slightly smaller than Safeway, at around 37,000 square feet. We unfortunately don't have any photos of the interior, but if you're curious, you can check out our store tour of the Harris Teeter in Mount Pleasant, SC here (looks like they have the same decor package). Well, we had two Safeways in a row and now we have two Harris Teeters in a row, with our store tomorrow over in Falls Church. Come back to check it out!

Snapshot: Safeway - Yorktown, Arlington, VA

Safeway Opened: unknown Location:  2500 N Harrison St, Yorktown, Arlington, VA Photographed:  February 2021 Contributor:  L.D. From one Safeway to another, we move on to the store at Yorktown in Arlington, VA. This is a much newer store than yesterday's renovated Marina , and my gut tells me this roughly 40,000 square foot store was probably built in the 1990s. It's also directly across the street from a Harris Teeter, which we'll take a look at tomorrow!

Snapshot: Safeway - Old Dominion, McLean, VA

Safeway Opened:  ca. 1960s Location:  6244 Old Dominion Dr, McLean, VA Photographed:  February 2021 Contributor:  L.D. A very cool store that we're taking a look at today! The Safeway at the Chesterbrook Shopping Center dates back to the Marina days of the 1950s/60s with an original 11,000 square foot Marina building. Today, it's been expanded out to 36,000 square feet but its Marina essence remains. It looks like a very attractive redesign of an original Marina store -- and I'm very glad they've left the bones visible instead of covering them all up! Here's what the store looked like prior to its remodel. It also looks like the wooden ceiling beams are visible inside. Certainly a place I'd like to visit if I were ever in the area myself. Tomorrow, we have another Safeway just to the southeast. Come back to check it out!

Snapshot: Balducci's Food Lover's Market - McLean, VA

Balducci's Food Lover's Market Opened: unknown Location:  6655 Old Dominion Dr, McLean, VA Photographed:  February 2021 Contributor:  L.D. Welcome to our first DC area store! This is the first of several posts from pictures sent in by a contributor. This 14,000 square foot Balducci's, in the northwestern DC suburb of McLean, may have previously been another chain supermarket, and I couldn't find an opening date for Balducci's either. This was one of the Balducci's acquired by Albertsons Mid-Atlantic in January 2021, when parent KB US Holdings went bankrupt. KB, of course, was just an LLC from a foreign investment firm to hold Kings and Balducci's. We've covered plenty of the Kings up in NJ (and NY/CT), but not too many Balducci's -- just Scarsdale and Westport . There are 8 Balducci's in total. Tomorrow we're going to see another Albertsons-owned store in town here on The Market Report!

Coming Soon!

We are continuing our northbound trek from Charleston, South Carolina to [redacted], Maine (ooh, did I leak confidential future plans??) by making a few stops in the DC and Baltimore areas! Now I must admit that it's been quite some time since I was last in these areas myself, and I don't have a lot of grocery stores photographed in this region myself. So this group is interesting in that it's entirely made up of contributor-submitted posts! In fact, the bulk of the pictures in the DC suburbs that we'll start with come to us courtesy of, um, my former roommate's girlfriend's best friend's cousin. No, I'm not exaggerating. We'll be spending a few days in the western and southern suburbs of Washington DC, moving from west to east passing through McLean, Arlington, Falls Church, Bailey's Crossroads, and Alexandria, VA, , then making a single stop in DC itself, before jumping up to a southwestern suburb of Baltimore. And then we're on to Pennsy...

Snapshot: ALDI - Woodbridge East, VA

ALDI Opened: unknown Previous Tenants:  unknown Location:  13291 Gordon Blvd, Woodbridge, VA Photographed:  December 2021 We're all the way at the northern part of Woodbridge, VA for our final supermarket in town. This ALDI is in the Gordon Plaza, which appears to have originally been anchored by a supermarket and a department store . The ALDI takes up the right half, or roughly 19,000 square feet, of what I suspect was the supermarket. This is one of two ALDIs in town, by the way. And that's all for Woodbridge, but up next we'll be staying in the state for now as we travel to DC suburbs! Before we move on to our next group, though, starting on Monday, we have a few updates tomorrow. Check out three here on The Market Report and two over on The Independent Edition !

Snapshot: Food Lion - Jefferson Davis North, Woodbridge, VA

Food Lion Opened: unknown Previous Tenants:  none Location:  13414 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Woodbridge, VA Photographed:  December 2021 Folks, this 33,000 square foot Food Lion in an unnamed strip mall at the corner of Jefferson Davis Highway and Gordon Boulevard is not particularly remarkable, as few Food Lions are. But it is our last Food Lion as we begin to wrap up our coverage of the mid-Atlantic area! We're all the way at the north end of Woodbridge here (which is home to several other Food Lions, too). We have one final Woodbridge store across the street from this one, which we'll be covering right here on The Market Report tomorrow!

Snapshot: Todos Supermarket - Woodbridge, VA

Todos Supermarket Owner: Carlos Castro Opened:  1990 Cooperative:  none Location:  13905 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Woodbridge, VA Photographed:  December 2021 Our final Latin/international supermarket in Woodbridge, VA is the middle sized one -- Fresh World was over 50,000 square feet, while Americana was just under 20,000. This one is right in the middle at slightly more than 35,000 square feet. This is Todos Supermarket's older location, with a newer one at 16593 River Ridge Blvd here in Woodbridge in a beautiful 70,000 square foot location that was previously J&J International and before that, probably a large chain supermarket (Safeway, if I had to guess). Unfortunately, we will not be seeing that one although it looks really nice . We have two more grocery stores here in Woodbridge before we leave the city and they're both large chain stores, so check the next one out on The Market Report tomorrow.

Snapshot: Americana Grocery - Woodbridge, VA

Americana Grocery Owner: Pablo Perez Opened:  unknown Cooperative:  none Location:  14428 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Woodbridge, VA Photographed:  December 2021 It might not be the 50,000 square foot international superstore that Fresh World is, but the Americana Grocery of Woodbridge, one of three in the Latin supermarket chain, is still a substantial international supermarket at 20,000 square feet. I grabbed these pictures while driving by at night (I was not driving, of course) so they're not great but I did touch up that first one a little bit for a little bit of a better shot of the store. And it's appropriate, I think, to have Americana Grocery on July 4th! But it's not the only store we have today -- this strip mall was originally home to an A&P. Check that out here , and tomorrow, we move about another mile north to our next independent Latin supermarket!

14478 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Woodbridge, VA

Original Tenant: A&P Address: 14478 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Woodbridge, VA Opened:  1960s Closed:  unknown Later Tenants:  Carquest Photographed:  December 2021 Keeping with our patriotic theme for the 4th of July, we are seeing the Americana Grocery at the north end of this strip mall and the former Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company location at the southern end! This centennial A&P is roughly 19,000 square feet and is almost a perfect square, which is not the model I'm more familiar with (many of the centennials in the northern NJ area are long and thin, though that's frequently because they were retrofitted into existing stores or other buildings). Tomorrow, we move about another mile north to our next Latin supermarket over on The Independent Edition !

TOUR: Fresh World - Woodbridge, VA

Fresh World Owner: Kenneth Kim Opened:  2021 Cooperative:  none Location:  2042 Daniel Stuart Sq, Woodbridge, VA Photographed:  December 2021 At this point, I've visited and photographed over 2700 current, former, and future grocery stores. I've seen a heck of a lot. And it takes a lot to impress me. But I was blown away by the Fresh World of Woodbridge. This store opened in September 2021 in a former Price Rite that was built in the 90s as a Safeway, and at a little under 53,000 square feet, it's not the largest supermarket in the world but feels gigantic. We have another nighttime tour, so we'll see the store without a lot of customers, but again every indication says this store is extremely high-volume. Several months after opening, the store was still absolutely packed with fresh merchandise and an incredible international selection. This is one of the most truly international supermarkets I've been to, with other contenders including the Long Island City (and...
