Key Food Supermarkets Owner:  Roberto Corona Opened:  2021 Previous Tenants:  Save-A-Lot (closed 2020) Cooperative:  Key Food Stores Location:  950 Main St, East Hartford, CT Photographed:  July 9, 2023 East Hartford has a few supermarkets, but the larger ones are outside of the downtown area. The ShopRite and ALDI are outside of town by about three miles, as well as a Stop & Shop that closed in 2021 . Also in 2021, this Key Food opened up in a 17,000 square foot space previously occupied by Save-A-Lot until 2020. The store faces away from Main Street, and here we can see the back of the store that I assume may have in the past been a storefront. There's a parking lot in the back, and the entrance we see in the first picture faces that. We've seen Save-A-Lot stores-turned-Key Food in Hartford and New Britain , and we'll see others. Original Grocery Tenant: A&P Address: 701 Main St, East Hartford, CT Opened:  between 1950 and 1955 Closed:  between 1964 and 1977 Later Tenants:  subdivided Photographed:  March 4, 2022 It's not all that exciting, but today's store is a former A&P, now subdivided, just east of downtown Hartford in, well, East Hartford. Thanks to Groceteria , we know that the 24,000 square foot space was constructed as an A&P between 1950 and 1955 -- placing it just before the Centennial range -- and it closed at some point between 1964 and 1977. East Hartford has a ShopRite in a former Shaw's in a former A&P, but from the 90s or early 2000s, so I'm not sure if there was another A&P in town between this store's closing and that store's opening. There's no longer a supermarket here, but there is a CTown just under a mile south and a new Key Food opened recently around a third of a mile north. We'll be touring that store tomorrow!

ShopRite of East Hartford Owner:  Richard and Kye Brunetti Cohen / Waverly Markets Opened:  2011 Previous Tenants:  A&P Super Foodmart > Shaw's Cooperative:  Wakefern Food Corp. In fact, it's in East Hartford! This store started out as an A&P store, as we can tell from the beautifully original facade, but was later taken over by Shaw's. When Shaw's left the state in 2011, most of the stores were sold to ShopRite operators. While the Cohens, who also the one over in Manchester , bought this location at the time, they did a full renovation but the Shaw's decor wasn't all that old anyway, so we'll see the bones remain.
