The basement supermarket closed in 2025 for remodeling, and over about a year it was expanded from the original 24,000 square feet or so to its present size of just under 40,000 square feet by taking up both floors of the building it's in. Now, the main supermarket is still in the basement, but nonfoods like kitchenwares, paper and cleaning, and personal care items have been moved up to the main floor. What is Walfood, you might ask? It's not Walmart or Waldbaum's or Walgreens, but instead, a Chinese supermarket that's recently opened a location in the northern part of Flushing in Queens. It's large -- possibly as large as 40,000 square feet, making it one of the largest Asian grocers in Flushing -- and very modern and stylish inside. The store is oriented at a 90-degree angle to the street, so the front-end runs along the left side wall. Produce is up at the front, with seafood and meat along the right side and frozen in the first aisle. The grocery aisles run front to back, and dairy/refrigerated foods are on the back wall.
