Update: Patel Brothers - Shrewsbury, MA

Patel Brothers Opened: ca. 2012 Owner: Mafat & Tulsi Patel Previous Tenants: non-grocery tenants Cooperative: none Location: 504 Boston Tpk, Shrewsbury, MA Photographed: May 14, 2026 Happy summer break ! I'm going to try to catch up on news posts I still need to do during this break, so stay tuned. We return to the Shrewsbury Patel Brothers for a quick update! The store has undergone an expansion and a small renovation, bringing it from around 14,000 square feet to a bit over 20,000. That's in advance of the massive former Stop & Shop across the street becoming a super-sized Apna Bazar , which I'm sure is on Patel Brothers' mind. One other minor change: they've dropped the "Farmers Market" from the name here, and that appears to be because Patel Brothers uses the Farmers Market brand for smaller locations. And now that this one is larger (though still not very big), it no longer qualifies as a Farmers Market. The layout inside is slightly d...

Update: Stop & Shop (former) - Shrewsbury, MA

Stop & Shop Open: 1996 - 2024 Owner:  Ahold Delhaize Previous Tenants:  Edwards (closed 1996) Cooperative:  none Location:  539-571 Boston Tpk, Shrewsbury, MA Photographed:  February 7, 2025 It's time to return to one of the Stop & Shop stores that closed in late 2024 -- this one in central Massachusetts, just outside Worcester. The Shrewsbury store opened in the early 1990s as an Edwards, not a Shaw's as I had originally theorized (thank you to everyone who explained the Edwards history to me!). Around 1996 or the late 90s, it was converted to Stop & Shop, which closed in 2024 . The store is still vacant with no apparent indications of what's to come, but it's possible there's a new tenant lined up. For one, the store isn't advertised as available for lease anywhere that I can find online nor was there any space available signage on the building itself. The Citizens Bank, which originally was inside the supermarket, is now operating from a small v...

TOUR: India Market - Shrewsbury, MA

India Market Opened: 2015 Owner:  Yousuf Raheem Previous Tenants:  Burlington Coat Factory Cooperative:  none Location:  1000 Boston Tpk, Shrewsbury, MA Photographed:  October 23, 2021 The Olde Shrewsbury Village, a shopping center (set up kind of like an outlet mall more than a typical strip mall) constructed around 1990, was once home to a roughly 30,000 square foot Burlington Coat Factory. When the clothing store vacated its space between 2011 and 2014, India Market moved in, opening in 2015. (The operator also does business in other locations as Farmer's India Market .) It's one of the larger Indian supermarkets in the central MA area, especially compared to the much smaller Patel Brothers just west, for instance. You enter to an expansive produce department, with a counter to the right selling some prepared foods, juices, and the like. A halal meat department sits in the back right corner of the store (not too many Indian supermarkets around here have ded...

TOUR: Price Chopper - Shrewsbury, MA

Price Chopper Opened: 2010 Owner:  Northeast Grocery Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative:  none Location:  731 Boston Tpk, Shrewsbury, MA Photographed:  October 23, 2021 A few days ago, we checked out the former Price Chopper of Shrewsbury, and I mentioned that in 2010, the store moved just east to a new-build location. It's funny that this store is about 64,000 square feet, nearly identical in size to both the Shaw's and Stop & Shop in town. But this store is the farthest east of those three, and also the highest-volume according to Placer.ai. This looks similar to the Webster Price Chopper on the outside (and East Stroudsburg , for that matter), but because Webster was built just a few years after this one, there's a different decor package on the inside. So this store very closely resembles the East Stroudsburg location, among others. Grand aisle is on the right side of the store, with the bagel/donut shop and Starbucks and a small cafe on the front ...
