The Grocers of Back Bay & Longwood

We are coming down to the end of the city of Boston, now that we've finished Back Bay and Longwood! These northwestern neighborhoods are a gradient from the more dense urban and historical character of Back Bay to the more green, suburban Longwood to the west with hospitals and colleges. You can click on any of the points to visit that store's post. Coming Up Next Up next, it's actually time to move outside of the city of Boston and into the neighboring town of Brookline! As you can see on the map above, the town is surrounded on three sides by Boston, but borders the city of Newton on the west. The main part of town is Coolidge Corner, at the intersection of Beacon and Harvard Streets (it's just west of the Longwood area, and about a mile west of the Star Market we saw in Longwood ). Most of what we'll see is within a few blocks of Coolidge Corner, although I've also photographed two stores a bit farther away in either direction on Beacon Street. But we'll...

Stop & Shop - Boston, MA (Longwood/Mission Hill)

Stop & Shop Opened: 2003 Owner:  Ahold Delhaize Previous Tenants:  none; other stores previously on property Cooperative:  none Location:  1620 Tremont St, Boston, MA Photographed:  June 2, 2019 and July 19, 2019 Welcome to Mission Hill! This store is right on the border of Longwood and Mission Hill, which is south of the Back Bay / Fenway area. This suburban area is between Longwood, the suburb of Brookline to the west, Roxbury to the east, and Jamaica Plain to the south.  This complex was a ground-up build in 2003, but it replaced an older store on the property. It wasn't a Stop & Shop, though. Instead, some searching on Newspapers.com revealed that it opened as an Elm Farms Food Store in April 1955. It looks like it may have been co-branded Elm Farms and Calumet Supermarket -- it appears that Elm Farms may have been a cooperative? -- and by 1978, it seems to have been co-branded Giant Value and Calumet. Calumet was in business until at least...

Star Market - Boston, MA (Longwood)

Star Market Opened: 2015 Owner:  Albertsons Companies Previous Tenants:  Star Market (early 1970s-early 2000s) > Shaw's (early 2000s-2015) Cooperative:  none Location:  33 Kilmarnock St, Boston, MA Photographed:  April 18, 2019; July 5, 2019; and July 27, 2019 Yikes. You can tell this is a 1970s store for sure! Nothing like some drab gray cinderblock for a beautiful supermarket exterior. This low and flat store did in fact open up as a new-build Star Market in the early 1970s, spanning a long and thin space of 30,000 square feet. The store is oriented to face the street, which you can see in the below picture, but there's a parking lot on the right side, which is in the first picture. Like so many other Star Markets, this one became a Shaw's under Sainsbury's ownership in the early 2000s and stayed Shaw's up until 2015, when it converted back to Star Market. The store also got a renovation at that time, and it was actually a rather extensive remodel. More on...
