Original Grocery Tenant: Weis Markets Address: 2304 N 3rd St, Harrisburg, PA Opened:  1960 Closed:  1999 Later Tenants:  Emerald Food Market > Eagle Supermarket > Uptown Food Market Photographed:  August 14, 2022 A quick look at what used to be Uptown Harrisburg's largest supermarket, a 16,000 square foot former Weis that later became a series of independent grocery stores, Emerald Food Market, Eagle Supermarket , and Uptown Food Market . Today, it's split between a Family Dollar and a laundromat, but the distinctive tower is still there. Next door, we have a building I suspect is also a former grocery store, but a much earlier one than this. Come back tomorrow to check it out!

The former building of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Elizabeth, NJ has been repurposed with a nod to its past. The Eagle Supermarket opened with a freshly-painted eagle decorating the front of the building approximately in the 1980s and takes up the ground floor. You enter on the right side, leading to produce along the right-side wall. The store also has service deli and butcher counters along the back wall, plus a large hot food bar and seating area to the left. It's in a separate room from the main supermarket. Eagle's original owner sold the store to his grandson in 2003, who operated the store with his wife. Maikel Martinez and Ana Lemes then sold the store again in 2006 before opening their new Eagle Supermarket in Roselle . Martinez and Lemes returned to the city of Elizabeth in 2012 with the opening of their Superfood Marketplace on First St. This supermarket is owned by the Universal Food Markets chain, which also owns the store of the same name in Rahwa...

Last summer, we saw the Eagle Supermarket of Elizabeth, NJ. The owners of that store opened a new Eagle Supermarket in Roselle in 2008 and sold the original location in Elizabeth, but the new owners decided to keep the name. Here in Roselle, it's hard to tell exactly what the building was previously. I doubt it was a new-build store, but it was at least extensively renovated. It's a tiny building! This store is on St. Georges Ave (St. George Ave, according to some), in a stretch that historically has not been the greatest neighborhood. The area has picked up, though, and this 10-year-old supermarket is indicative of the general trend of revitalization along this corridor. Except, come on, can't they get a new M? You enter on the right to dairy in the first aisle and frozen foods along the back wall. Meat, produce, and deli are actually in a separate room to the left.
