Then in 2014, Vicente's opened their second location -- at over 35,000 square feet, it was almost double the size of the Main Street store. Vicente's pulled out all the stops for this store, using various loans and incentive programs designed to bring supermarkets into lower-income areas that needed them. The 2014 opening was high-profile and hailed as a fundamental change to this neighborhood. This is the only supermarket in downtown Brockton. The chain of international supermarkets, specializing in food from Latin America and Africa -- specifically Cape Verde, as they earn the distinction of the only Cape Verdean food store in the US -- has expanded outside their home city of Brockton, but here on Main Street, they've been selling tropical foods for decades. This store, the building of which dates back to the 1950s or so (no later than 1960), became Vicente's first supermarket in 2001 when they moved out of a smaller storefront in the northern part of the city. The most common conversion is a drugstore to a supermarket, but here in Pawtucket, a closed Ocean State Job Lot (which, for those unfamiliar, is a discount general merchandise store in the vein of Ollie's Bargain Outlet) has become a Vicente's Supermarket. The store is around 18,000 square feet and is located just south of downtown Pawtucket, a city of 75,000 north of Providence. Back in the 1960s and 70s, this was a Finast, later becoming Ocean State Job Lot for a few decades. Vicente's opened up after an extensive renovation in 2021.
