TOUR: Fine Fare Supermarkets - Throggs Neck, Bronx, NY

This 12,000 square foot supermarket is the only one in central Throggs Neck, with the Foodtown at the north end and a small Krasdale affiliate, called S&W Supermarket & Deli , at the southern end. It's owned by Miguel Luna and has in fact been singled out for being one of the cleanest supermarkets around -- never once failing a state inspection. It was previously a CTown (and originally an A&P, I think), with Fine Fare opening in the early 2000s and completing a full renovation in 2009, later being renovated in smaller refreshes. In the first aisle, we have a beautiful produce department lining the left side, with bakery/deli in the front on the right side, and beer in the back right corner. Dairy lines the back wall, with meat in an expansion in the back left corner. Frozen lines the last aisle. The service counter is on the side wall, with grab-and-go prepared produce (including fresh-squeezed orange juice) and bakery items on the front. The exit hall...

TOUR: Key Food Supermarkets - Castle Hill, Bronx, NY

I'm really excited about this tour! Up until recently, this 12,000 square foot store which is owned by Kent Tavera, was a fairly average-looking Fine Fare . 2016 brought a conversion to Food Fair Fresh Market, whose Newark location we've toured (and which also has a store on 163rd St in Mott Haven, Bronx). 163rd was the first location to get a major, inside and out renovation, with this store coming second and Newark in progress now. This store had been renovated fairly recently, so the interior renovation was less extensive here than 163rd. The exterior was totally remodeled, though, and the store has been converted to Key Food (Food Fair being a Key Food banner). We can see new produce fixtures, lighting, and flooring, with older decor that has been refreshed and hung in front of the stacks of paper products (woohoo, you can actually read it!). At one point, this store's decor matched the NJ City Supermarkets in Newark and Irvington  -- and Fairview, which ha...

TOUR: Western Beef Supermarket - Soundview North, Bronx, NY

In the 2015-16 A&P bankruptcy, the Pathmark at Bruckner Blvd and Leland Ave closed and was replaced after extensive renovation by a Western Beef Supermarket. It's worth noting that this store is across Bruckner from a ShopRite and just to the east along Bruckner from the Soundview Food Bazaar . Let's return to this graphic I made for the Food Bazaar post: So we've seen the Associated and Fine Fare to the north, and I just mentioned the Food Bazaar and ShopRite. We're at the Western Beef to the north, with the southern one being the Rosedale Ave location. The Key Food and Golden Mango to the southeast are our next two tours. The Associated to the southwest has become a Food Universe  and here are the Met Foods , the Compare Foods , and the CTown . Heading into the store (this being, I believe, the second newest Western Beef out there), we find a clean, bright, and extremely colorful produce department. There's basically nothing left from Pathm...
