Hannaford Opened: ca. 2003 Owner:  Ahold Delhaize Previous Tenants:  Don's Shop 'n Save Cooperative:  none Location:  86 Cottage St, Bar Harbor, ME Photographed:  June 15, 2022 Welcome to everybody's favorite vacation destination, the parking lot of the Hannaford in downtown Bar Harbor, Maine. Okay, not really. But more than four million tourists visit Acadia National Park every year, located here on Mount Desert Island. And this Hannaford is less than a mile from the outer border of the park. Bar Harbor is a small, quaint town, so this is a smaller Hannaford measuring just about 26,000 square feet. It was previously Don's Shop 'n Save until around 2003. Before we head in, here's a look at a fire exit floor plan posted in the store to give you an idea of the layout... The top wall in that diagram is the front wall of the store, so produce is in the front-right corner (top-left above), with dairy lining the rest of the first aisle. Town Hill Market Opened: unknown Owner:  Alexandra Simis Previous Tenants:  unknown Cooperative:  none Location:  1339 ME-102, Bar Harbor, ME Photographed:  June 15, 2022 This little general store is one of just a handful of grocers on Mount Desert Island, which also has two full supermarkets. This is a bit of a specialty store, with natural and local products, fresh baked goods, and a small kitchen. There's also an ice cream shop attached! This store is only open seasonally, and the summer brings a lot of tourists through this area (myself included) as this is on the way into Acadia National Park. Downtown Bar Harbor is right at the entrance to the park, and that's where we're headed tomorrow for our final coastal Maine store. Also, don't forget to see today's other post here !

Edwards Brothers Supermarkets Opened: between 2019 and 2023 Owner:  Jeremy & Jason Edwards Previous Tenants:  Trenton Marketplace (closed between 2019 and 2023) Cooperative:  none Location:  1007 Bar Harbor Rd, Trenton, ME Photographed:  June 15, 2022 Welcome to Trenton! If this and our recent visit to Camden  might make you think we're back in my home state of New Jersey, I'd like to remind you that Trenton, Maine has a population of just 1500. (Trenton, NJ has almost 100,000.) Here we're taking a quick look at an Edwards Brothers Supermarket, which opened at some point between 2019 and 2023 taking over a longtime independent called Trenton Marketplace. This supermarket is around 11,000 square feet and is supplied by Hannaford. Edwards Brothers also recently took over a location in Searsport , bringing their total store count to 4. Hannaford Opened: by 2003 Owner:  Ahold Delhaize Previous Tenants:  Shop 'n Save (converted to Hannaford around 2003) Cooperative:  none Location:  225 High St, Ellsworth, ME Photographed:  June 17, 2022 Happy Monday! Just next to the Shaw's in Ellsworth is a Hannaford, opened in the early 00s in a former Shop 'n Save. I'm a little fuzzy on the history here. This mall had a department store , owned by various chains over the years, and a Shop 'n Save supermarket. In the early 00s, Shop 'n Save became Hannaford. It looks like this could've been the original supermarket, with either Shop 'n Save or Hannaford moving to the current building at some point. The layout is standard Hannaford. The grand aisle is on the right side, with produce in the front-right corner and cheese/deli in the back-right. Bakery is opposite in the island, and meat/seafood are at the back. Shaw's Opened: after 1989 Owner:  Albertsons Companies Previous Tenants:  Zayre > IGA Cooperative:  none Location:  175 High St, Ellsworth, ME Photographed:  June 12, 2022 It's been a little while since we've toured a Shaw's! (It looks like it was back in Massachusetts .) Here in Ellsworth, a roughly 56,000 square foot Shaw's anchors this strip mall. This store is just about the same size as the Hannaford down the street, which we'll see Monday, and much larger than the small John Edward's Market downtown. Inside, this is pretty much a standard Shaw's. Produce is in the front-right corner, with deli in the back-right corner. Meat and seafood are on the back wall, along with dairy which continues down the last aisle. Frozen foods are also on the left side, and bakery and pharmacy are in the front-left corner. I couldn't pinpoint an opening date for this store, but judging by the setup, it's probably an early-00s build (or a store that was ext...
