In 2014, following the bankruptcy and subsequent demise of wholesaler White Rose, the retail side of White Rose (Met Foodmarkets and Pioneer Supermarkets) and Associated Food Holdings, which was supplied by White Rose, struggled. They found it difficult to supply their stores through the bankruptcy. Met/Pioneer and Associated were cooperatives, made up of independent store owners, some of whom decided to leave those groups. Met/Pioneer and Associated collectively lost nearly 100 independent store owners, many joining rival cooperatives. The largest group went to Key Food, which created a new banner -- Food Universe -- for them. So after White Rose's bankruptcy, Met/Pioneer was merged with Associated (which also had the Compare Foods ...

Owned by Narciza Diaz, this supermarket opened in 1996 as a CTown. By about 2005, it was switched to Key Food. It's currently under construction as a residential development is being construction directly above the supermarket while the store remains open. The 12,000 square foot store, located at 1050 Westchester Ave, had a complete interior and exterior renovation in 2011-2012. Photographed March 2019

Fine Fare Supermarkets Opened: 2017 Owner: Efrin Castro Previous Tenants:  Price Choice (ca. 2010-2012) > Fair Farm (2012-2017) Cooperative: Retail Grocers Group/General Trading Location: 950 Longwood Ave, Bronx, NY Photographed: March 8, 2019 and September 4, 2023 Before we begin, just a heads up: this was originally posted in August 2020, but was rewritten with new photos in July 2026. Now for the post! This store of around 10,000 square feet was built around 2010 on the ground floor of a new development on Westchester Avenue, the main business corridor through Longwood. It was originally a Price Choice, part of a local chain, and became an independent called Fair Farm in 2012 which switched to Fine Fare in 2017. So even though it's not brand-new, the inside still feels pretty new. The deli is right inside the entrance, with produce lining the rest of the first aisle. We have completed our Manhattan coverage and are now moving on to the southern part of the Bronx! We're going to start near where INT-95 enters the Bronx (Cross Bronx Expressway), and circle south through Highbridge and Melrose, before turning east along Westchester Avenue through Longwood. We'll cross the Bronx River before heading through Soundview and Castle Hill, then crossing the Westchester Creek into Throggs Neck. Stay tuned!
