Shop Fair Supermarkets Opened: October 2025 Owner:  Anibal Rodriguez Previous Tenants:  Food City (open in 1978) > Rite Aid Cooperative:  Retail Grocers Group Location:  1518 Westchester Ave, Bronx, NY Photographed:  October 29, 2025 Add it to the list: here's yet another New York City supermarket that has set up shop in a former drugstore! This former Rite Aid in the Soundview section of the Bronx is now the latest Shop Fair, just 9500 square feet. And like many of these other drugstores, this store was originally a supermarket. I don't have a full picture of its history, but one article I could find confirmed that it was a Food City in 1978. Rite Aid closed in 2023 or early 2024. This new Shop Fair has a lot in common with the store at 1510 St Nicholas Ave over in Manhattan, also a former Rite Aid that's become a Shop Fair owned by Anibal Rodriguez. Food Universe Marketplace Opened: October 9, 2025 Owner:  unknown Previous Tenants:  none; Waterbury Farms/Key Food Marketplace planned but never opened Cooperative:  Key Food Stores Location:  96 Grove St, Waterbury, CT Photographed:  October 30, 2025 This recently-opened Food Universe in Waterbury has an interesting history. Even though it's a new-build store, it wasn't built for Food Universe. Instead, it was originally contructed by the Hassen family starting in 2016 and first slated to be Waterbury Farms. Later, signage went up advertising a Key Food Marketplace around the same time the Hassens bought the Town Plot IGA and converted it to a Key Food Marketplace across town. That store then briefly became Banana Fresh Market and is now a Key Food again but under new ownership. Similarly, a different Key Food owner has taken over this Grove Street store and after finishing the construction that was started but never completed, has opened this one as a Food...

SuperFresh Opened: October 29, 2025 Owner:  Frank Pimentel Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative:  Key Food Stores Location:  3260 Fulton St, Brooklyn, NY Photographed:  October 29, 2025 The other grocery store opening on October 29 was the new Cypress Hills SuperFresh , a new-build store spanning a little over 20,000 square feet. Like Village Marketplace, SuperFresh held its soft opening on October 29, so you won't see any ribbon cutting pictures here. The store was also having some finishing touches put on even as a stream of customers were coming in to check out the new store. The store is quite large for its urban southeastern Brooklyn neighborhood, and you enter on the left side to the produce department. Beer, soda, and deli/bakery along with some dairy are to the right in this room, then you pass down a ramp into the main supermarket.
