And these bank buildings have been repurposed in all kinds of ways. My personal favorite, naturally, is as a supermarket. Whole Foods' latest New Jersey store, which opened last month, takes up a gorgeous former bank in downtown Hoboken. It's also the latest Daily Shop  -- not to mention the first in New Jersey and the smallest yet, at just 4800 square feet. The store is located on bustling Washington Street, a block over from a longtime independent natural food store Organic Basic Food . (And I've seen more than one review/post online comparing this store unfavorably to the stalwart independent organic market.) Urban Market of Hoboken Opened: March 14, 2025 Owner:  Ameed Mujalli Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative:  Key Food Stores Location:  1425 Washington St, Hoboken, NJ Photographed:  March 14, 2025 Welcome to the much-anticipated Urban Market of Hoboken! This store was announced back in 2022 , and since then the independent grocer has faced a series of delays. But the 14,000 square foot store finally opened yesterday, the first commercial tenant of this building constructed in 2017. Urban Market is a brand of Key Food Stores, which has a handful of other locations in New York City under the Urban Market name. One, in Long Island City , is also owned by the Mujalli family; they also own two Dumbo Market locations in Brooklyn, among other stores. The Mujallis are also working on replacing the LIC location with a new, larger store across the street. ACME Markets Opened: 2015 Owner:  Albertsons Companies Previous Tenants:  Vitale Foodtown > A&P Cooperative:  none Location:  614 Clinton St, Hoboken, NJ Photographed:  January 29, 2025 Time for another ACME renovation! (Did you see Bronxville ?) This one's also a former A&P, but it's a store we've seen before . The renovation has been finished and looks very good, with a couple exceptions. One is the ceiling -- especially since it's so low, it's extremely noticeable and very obviously discolored. The liquor store is completed to the left of the entrance, with produce straight ahead. The store is looking quite good, and another good sign: it was very busy at the time of my visit. That meant, though, taking pictures was very hard, so you'll excuse some of the truly awful pictures in this post.
