You might recall that back in May, I did a very long post about what's going on in Oakland Gardens, Queens -- one Key Food is changing to SuperFresh, while the other Key Food became a Holiday Farms and then a SuperFresh and is now back to Key Food. Let's check in on that first one, which transitioned from Key Food to SuperFresh as Dan's Supreme Supermarkets (Grobman family) sold the store to Food World (Lee family) back last spring.
The new SuperFresh owners appear to have finished their minor renovations here, which are more fix-ups than a major reinvention of the store. Decor didn't change, though some of the fixtures were replaced and the store has been reset to include a larger variety of Asian food. The produce department got some new fixtures, and produce is one area where the new owners really excel in their other stores, too.
Under the previous owners, a large salad bar had been scaled down, and now it's been removed entirely in favor of baked goods and nuts. The deli-bakery area has been reshuffled a bit, too, with some new refrigeration.
Cold cuts have been shifted into the deli area, and now a case of refrigerated Asian foods has been added to the first aisle here. Baked goods are also now in the first aisle, with beer moved to the second aisle, and a new meat case replacing the service butcher window.
Maintenance was a big issue here, as in the final days under Dan's Supreme, the store just got rather messy and dirty. There's still some issues, such as the water stains you can see on the ceiling above, but it is generally in better shape. New lighting throughout the store helps.
The grocery aisles have been reset to include a full aisle of Asian foods, a logical addition in a neighborhood with a growing Asian community.
It looks to me like the dairy cases were actually all replaced, which is a bit of a surprise since the old ones seemed to be in good condition. Maybe there were other issues that weren't visible. The freezers were not replaced.
It's interesting to see how this new ownership has adapted an existing store, changing it slightly over time. Although response I've seen online has been mixed -- some people particularly haven't taken kindly to the addition of Asian foods throughout the store, but that's increasingly what the neighborhood around here is looking for -- it was busy at the time of my visit. We'll see what else, if anything, changes over time here!
