Special Report: Foodtown - Staten Island, NY

Foodtown of Clove Road Opened:  April 2025 Owner:  David Shehadeh Previous Tenants:  Mignosi's Supermarket > Olive Tree Marketplace Cooperative:  Allegiance Retail Services Location:  1490 Clove Rd, Staten Island, NY Photographed:  May 8, 2025 At least three supermarkets on Staten Island have recently changed their name. In Rossville, a longtime Mignosi's Supermarket became an Ideal Fresh in 2022 and just held its grand reopening after an extensive renovation. In Rosebank, a Top Tomato became a Food Dynasty after a sale and also just completed a big remodel. And here in Rosebank, the Olive Tree Marketplace became a Foodtown in mid-April. But as we'll see, this unfortunately didn't come with a major renovation. I'm not sure of this store's entire history, but for a long time, it was a Mignosi's, founded by the family that now runs the Foodtown in East Stroudsburg (but who later sold it). In 2014, it was taken over by the Shehadeh family and reopened as...

3130 NJ-10, Denville, NJ

Original Grocery Tenant: Olive Tree Marketplace Address: 3130 NJ-10, Denville, NJ Opened:  2016 Closed:  2018 Later Tenants:  Corrado's Market (2019-spring 2023) Photographed:  June 4, 2023 Olive Tree Marketplace didn't quite last two years in this space in Denville, NJ on route 10, and while Corrado's made it a bit longer they were still out of business in about four years. The space reopened as a Corrado's in 2019, and while they improved the store greatly from Olive Tree, that wasn't enough to save the business. The closure of this store and North Arlington were very quiet, and no official announcement was made. It seems to be both abrupt and in line with a larger rethink (driven, it seems, by financial struggles) across the Corrado's business which I summarize in yesterday's North Arlington post. Many of the fixtures from this location were sold at auction, likely an attempt to make any last money they could from the failing store. No new tenant has ...

TOUR: Shop Fair Supermarket - Bay Ridge

We've established that Olive Tree Marketplace in Denville, NJ (left arrow to scroll through the pictures) was a miserable failure, as was the Foodtown-turned-Shop Fair of Howard Beach, Queens. The Shehadeh brothers, which owned those stores and several others (that actually remain in business), also own this location on 3rd Ave in Bay Ridge. This store was a longtime Associated Supermarket that was renovated and expanded in 2006 (possibly when the Shehadeh family took over the store, although I don't know for sure). Around 2012 or 2013, the store was briefly switched to Key Fresh & Natural, probably when Associated was going through bankruptcy, before switching back to Associated by 2015. This was one of the original Shop Fair stores when the group was formed in late 2016 and was fully switched to the new Shop Fair banner by early 2017. (Fun fact, Retail Grocers Group held a trademark on the Shop Fair name since the 1990s, but didn't open stores under the name unt...

More Comings and Goings

Coming I'm a little late on this one. The ribbon was officially cut on Gary's Market IGA at 7938 Dungan Rd in Philadelphia, PA on September 29, 2017. It was formerly the Holiday Market, run through the now-defunct Thriftway Shop n Bag cooperative. Under the same owners, Gary's is a member of IGA subgroup Retail Marketing Group, which does business as Your Local IGA . Property records suggest that Western Beef may be opening a new location at 205 W. 230th St in the Bronx , on a site that currently holds several smaller businesses. While no official announcement has come from Western Beef, the Riverdale Press did publish an article with more information. Lincoln Park residents Joanne and Marty Mulhearn have opened a new, independent fresh market called The Village Market in the Towaco section of Montville, NJ . With deli, prepared foods, meat, bakery, produce, cheese, and a salad bar, the market sounds more gourmet than mainstream. It's in a new development in th...

SNAPSHOT: Olive Tree Marketplace

Welcome to NJ Supermarkets' first Snapshot! This is how I'll post a picture or two if it isn't part of a full store tour, along with my usual droning on and on about it. Today we're taking a look at Olive Tree Marketplace in Denville, NJ... ...which is a 15,000-square-foot gourmet market that opened in 2015 as a Key Food affiliate. Dean Janeway, CEO of Key Food, lives in Denville; Key Food had previously tried Denville at a location which is now Walgreens in downtown. My later visit, on a nicer day, revealed that the store had become a Retail Grocers Group affiliate, a cooperative that also operates Fine Fare and Shop Fair supermarkets. The logo above the lettering on the front had been removed for one reason or another... ...possibly to make way for a Shop Fair logo, I originally thought. However, Olive Tree in Denville now appears to be under separate ownership or management from the other location on Staten Island, as they are now using an awful, homemade-loo...
