It's been fun, Boston! Over the last five months, we've seen every supermarket in Boston (except for one) and there's just an immense variety across the city. There's a lot to enjoy here, so if you haven't seen all the stores, make sure you see them all on this map and with the guide below. Your Guide to Boston Supermarkets America's Food Basket This New York-based cooperative of around 80 independently-owned supermarkets stretches from northern Massachusetts to southern Florida, and here in Boston, they have five stores, mostly in the southern part of the city. They focus on Latin American and Caribbean foods, but are also full-line supermarkets. We are coming down to the end of the city of Boston, now that we've finished Back Bay and Longwood! These northwestern neighborhoods are a gradient from the more dense urban and historical character of Back Bay to the more green, suburban Longwood to the west with hospitals and colleges. You can click on any of the points to visit that store's post. Coming Up Next Up next, it's actually time to move outside of the city of Boston and into the neighboring town of Brookline! As you can see on the map above, the town is surrounded on three sides by Boston, but borders the city of Newton on the west. The main part of town is Coolidge Corner, at the intersection of Beacon and Harvard Streets (it's just west of the Longwood area, and about a mile west of the Star Market we saw in Longwood ). Most of what we'll see is within a few blocks of Coolidge Corner, although I've also photographed two stores a bit farther away in either direction on Beacon Street. But we'll...

East Boston, which is just next to Boston's Logan Airport, has several sub-neighborhoods. To the west is Maverick Square, roughly in the area where we saw the Shaw's . Eagle Hill is to the north, but unfortunately I haven't photographed any stores there. As far as I can tell, the central area is referred to simply as East Boston, and out east of that is Orient Heights, which actually has a beach. East Boston, Logan Airport, Orient Heights, the independent town of Winthrop, and Deer Island are on this peninsula extending south of Revere, one of the suburbs north of Boston. We're going to check out the stores of Maverick Square, central East Boston, and Orient Heights. There's nothing like some fantastic Italian imported cheeses or salami, and that's just what the Salumeria Italiana in Boston's North End has to offer (pictured above). But while we've been here in the West End and North End, we've seen a couple other stores, including some great historical ones and a brand-new Star Market . Check them all out in this map below. Note that there's one store in gray on the map, the DeLuca's Market on Charles Street , a small gourmet grocer that I haven't visited. There's another DeLuca's that we'll see shortly! Most of the time we spent here was in Chinatown , but we also made stops in the South End and at Downtown Boston's only supermarket. Here's a look at all of those stores on a map! Coming Up Next As we continue our journey to the northern part of Boston, we are making stops in the neighborhoods just north of downtown, in the West End and North End. Both are dense, urban neighborhoods, but very historic and also generally affluent. The North End is particularly known for its Italian community ( and its great food! ), and the West End has some government and private office buildings along with Mass General Hospital's expansive complex. Just south of the West End is historic Beacon Hill , where we'll be seeing just one store (so for the purposes of this blog, I'm considering Beacon Hill and the West End as one). We are now done with South Boston and Boston Harbor! The quiet, mostly residential neighborhood is only home to a couple supermarkets, but we also saw quite a few former grocery stores and some small independent grocers . Take a look at all of them on the map below. Coming Up Next Now we're headed into the main part of the city! We're going to start in the South End -- which, as I mentioned, is different from South Boston, neither of which is actually in the southern part of Boston -- and then head north through Chinatown and into downtown Boston. The South End is a fairly affluent, mostly residential and retail/restaurant neighborhood, roughly between Roxbury and the Back Bay/Longwood area. Chinatown then spans an area around route 90, which runs underground, just south of downtown. The Boston Common is just to the northwest of Chinatown and just west of downtown. Let's begin by seeing the South End's independent supermarket on Monday!

South Boston is an insular peninsula (come on now, that's just fun to say) at the far eastern edge of the city just southeast of downtown. And as I mentioned , most of the southern neighborhoods of Boston weren't originally part of the city, so at one time, this actually was the southern part of the city. Now, it's the roughly in the northeastern part, but it's kept its name.
