Special Report: Fine Fare Supermarkets - Queens, NY (Far Rockaway)

Fine Fare Supermarkets Opened: June 13, 2026 Owner: Anibal Rodriguez Previous Tenants:  none; Associated > Food Dynasty previously on property Cooperative:  Retail Grocers Group/General Trading Location: 17-25 Village Ln, Far Rockaway, NY Photographed: July 15, 2026 Welcome to Far Rockaway, a neighborhood of far southeastern Queens we haven't been to yet. It's on a peninsula (basically a barrier island, but it's still connected to the Long Island/Brooklyn/Queens landmass) out south of the JFK airport. So we're really out here in the far reaches of New York City, but we're still technically within the city limits. And across the city (plus Long Island ), Shop Fair owner Anibal Rodriguez has been expanding with some really nice new stores. It's time to add another to the list, a newly-built Fine Fare in the main business area of Far Rockaway. In addition to this Fine Fare, Rodriguez owns no fewer than four other supermarkets in Far Rockaway, plus another ...

Special Report: 262 Main St, West Orange, NJ

Original Grocery Tenant: Ernest Shopwell Supermarket Address: 262 Main St, West Orange, NJ Opened: unknown Closed: ca. 1980 Later Tenants:  Tory Corner Market (ca. 1980-ca. 1990) > Rite Aid (early 1990s-2019) > Walgreens (2019-2024) Photographed: February 24, 2025 This somewhat unremarkable former Rite Aid/Walgreens in downtown West Orange, NJ is actually a former supermarket. I don't know the entire history here, but by around 1970, it was the Ernest Shopwell Supermarket (not apparently related to the Daitch/Shopwell chain of New York), and around 1980, it became the Tory Corner Market affiliated with Fine Fare. Rite Aid was open by the early 1990s. The store is just under 10,000 square feet, and has been vacant since Walgreens closed in 2024. So why bother looking at this store now? A proposal that's gone all but completely under the radar is to demolish the former Rite Aid building along with a vacant former diner next to it to build this new, two-floor supermarke...

Update: SuperFresh & Food Universe!

SuperFresh Opened: March 12, 2025 Owner: Bruce Yong Pak Previous Tenants: Roulstons Capitol Super Market (1940s-1960s) > Associated (1981-??) > Fine Fare (1990s) > Met Foodmarkets (open by 2004) Cooperative: Key Food Stores Location: 3404 Quentin Rd, Brooklyn, NY Photographed: February 13, 2026 It's SuperFresh time! We're back in Marine Park in southern Brooklyn to check in on the remodel at the tiny supermarket here. You can see previous coverage here . It appears to be done (I think?) with remodeling -- although there's still a lot that seems unfinished, it doesn't look like any more work is going on. New shelving for snacks and bread, along with a case for fresh rolls, has been added to the front-right corner of the store. Produce and frozen are in the first aisle on the right side, with the rest of frozen lining the back wall. Meat and dairy are on the left side in the last aisle, with deli and hot food in the front-left corner. Here's a look at ...
