Even though the Allegiance Retail cooperative doesn't seem to be in the greatest shape lately (you can read more of my musings here , if you're so inclined), they've still had a couple of notable store openings lately. That includes those two in Philadelphia but also a couple of Foodtown locations in New York. Most recently, Brooklyn Harvest Markets has opened a Foodtown in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. This 9,000 square foot supermarket was previously a Rite Aid and underwent an extensive renovation to transform it into a Foodtown affiliated with Brooklyn Harvest Markets (which also has a location in Bay Ridge, formerly The Food Emporium ). Compare & Save Supermarket Opened: May 15, 2026 Owner:  Carlos Batista Previous Tenants: Penn Fruit > Rite Aid Cooperative: Allegiance Retail Services Location: 6515 Castor Ave, Philadelphia, PA Photographed:  June 5, 2026 I don't have any inside insight, but from my estimation, Allegiance Retail Services -- the cooperative behind Foodtown and Pathmark -- has had a bumpy couple of years. Their member Morton Williams was acquired by Wakefern, cutting around 15 stores from their network, followed by member Adam Shapiro switching to Key Food  (that was another three stores). A brand-new Hudson Valley Freshtown closed in under a year after opening, while Food Circus has retreated to just two stores after closing stores in Port Monmouth and Red Bank . Meanwhile, the launch of Pathmark Daily feels more like a last-ditch retool to save a struggling store than a true launch of a new brand. Pathmark Daily Opened: May 1, 2026 Owner: Mike Said Previous Tenants: Foodtown (2023-2026) Cooperative: Allegiance Retail Location: 625 N Merrick Ave, East Meadow, NY Photographed:  December 5, 2025 (Foodtown) and May 7, 2026 Pathmark! Any longtime tri-state area residents will remember that name, and now it's returned to Long Island (once a stronghold of the chain) with a small-format Pathmark Daily location in East Meadow. Wait, how did Pathmark come back from the dead? And wasn't there already a Pathmark location? And what the heck is a Pathmark Daily? Let's take a closer look. In A&P's bankruptcy , Allegiance Retail -- the cooperative behind Foodtown -- bought the rights to the Pathmark, Green Way, and Food Basics brands. They started using Green Way as a natural brand just as A&P had, but also started using it as a store name .
