TOUR: Associated Supermarkets - Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY

We're still wandering around Greenpoint for a look at another supermarket along Manhattan Avenue. If you need to catch up, check out our coverage on The Market Report and The Independent Edition ! This store is in the very Polish section of Greenpoint. You could say it's the most Polish section... which seems to be right in line with this store's corporate name, Polmost Food. The owner's name is Andrew Wojnarowski. It's been in business since 1980 and honestly the appearance of the store hasn't changed much, especially on the outside. The original exterior look lasted until 2016 ( here's a look at the store in the 80s). The interior is pretty nice, being extremely "bright, white, and clean" as Acme Style described some store somewhere at some time. Small office in the front corner of the store, which is pretty common for stores of this era. Looks like quite a few of the fixtures, as we'll see, have been updated, and the first a...

TOUR: CTown Supermarkets - Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY

We've heard plenty about how great the CTown here in Greenpoint is, now it's time to actually check out the store itself. A recent renovation removed the store's hideous turquoise awning to reveal the store's A&P heritage. Interesting that they chose to push the CTown logo off to one side and put Fresh in the center of the facade. However, the CTown logo is highly visible against the brick building! One side note here, the store has been pretty extensively remodeled since my visit, changing layout and decor. Which is... interesting, because I found the store to be in excellent condition. You enter to a deli/prepared foods case immediately on the right with produce in the first aisle. The deli is in the back corner at the end of the first aisle, with meat on the back wall and frozen/dairy in the last aisle. The store's owners have opened up the first aisle to make the produce department much more spacious, and moved the deli to the front corner to the...

Snapshot: Mr. B's Biedronka - Greenpoint

Taking a quick stop for the last installment in International Foods Week in the historically Polish neighborhood of Brooklyn, Greenpoint, in the northwestern corner of the borough. This is a Polish grocery store that focuses mostly on packaged and nonperishable foods. I am partially Polish, but I speak no Polish at all. So I assumed "biedronka" means something like grocery store, so this is Mr. B's Grocery Store, essentially. Nope! I couldn't have been farther off. Biedronka  means ladybug . Hence the pictures of the ladybugs. Not that that makes any sense, though. This store was previously called only Biedronka, but now it's Mr. B's Biedronka. Can anyone who actually speaks Polish help us out here? (Is the B in Mr. B's a shortening of Biedronka, so it's like Mr. Ladybug's?) Mr. B's Biedronka is located at 854 Manhattan Ave, Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
